"This might be a problem, Alpha Kingsley."
Most of the wolves in the room took such offence that Alpha Gunter lifted both hands to signal his peace.
Beta Lucas raised up one hand, but only to signal that he wanted to dish out HIS PIECE, "Alpha Gunter... what exactly do you mean by problem?"
"Alright, Alpha Gunter, I know you snow wolves think you're blue blooded or something, but Alpha Kingsley's bloodline is purebred black wolf, alright?" Gamma Endo interrupted Beta Lucas anyway - even though the Beta's hand was still raised.
Beta Lucas looked annoyed, but put down his hand to point with an open palm towards Alpha Gunter, "Alpha Gunter... can I just warn you to choose your words very carefully."
Alpha Gunter nodded. I could tell he was exercising great patience here. I'm sure no one in Snow Moon or probably the entire Blue Packlands would dare to disrespect him this way - I mean, Snow Moon was the last surviving Snow Wolf Pack in the Blue Packlands. And Alpha Gunter was a super elder (super old) wolf. Ancient lycan traditions like the one where hierarchy determined who was allowed to speak first still applied.
Too bad he was stuck here with us. Hahaha. I guess you could say (although not to his face), every dog has his day.
"I am quite aware of Alpha Kingsley's infamous black wolf powers." Alpha Gunter answered in his usual calm and toneless way, but that was exactly the problem. Alpha Gunter liked to speak in a light and icy tone - I think that's his usual polite voice, but sometimes it made it feel like he was looking down on the whole world.
Which I knew he was not, because I knew someone who did pretty much looked down on the whole world (i.e. Bell), and Alpha Gunter was quite a different type of wolf.
I think Alpha Gunter was just the type who needed a long time to warm up to people. But I was probably the only one who thought so because the other wolves were taking Alpha Gunter's response rather badly.
"Are you saying our Alpha's own daughter not good enough for your HUMAN son?" Gamma Harry challenged.
It's a good thing Alpha Gunter wasn't the type of wolf that was easily riled, he calmly waved his hand as if to ward off the aggression, "Hear me out first. The problem isn't anything to do with your pack or Alpha Kingsley's lovely daughter."
"Then what's the problem?" Gamma Endo challenged.
I had to give Alpha Gunter props for adapting to a different culture in our lands. Back in the Gold Packlands, he didn't even answer directly to Ki because Ki was only a beta, but now in the Green Packlands, he had no choice but to contend with two challenging Gammas and an old Beta who questioned him like an errant school boy.
I suppose, when in Rome, do as the Romans do. And when in the Green Packlands, do as the barbarian wolves do. Hahaha.
"The problem is in my son's nature." Alpha Gunter sighed.
"Eh, me, Dad?" River sounded startled.
Well, yes. River was problematic. But I was sure I could take care of him. I was just about to say so too when Alpha Gunter sighed again. Alpha Gunter's sigh was like the quietest winter wind, it was cold too - like someone left the window opened in winter. I looked up to the windows, just to double check, but they were properly sealed shut. All the draft was really coming from the Snow Alpha, "Although my son is human now, he is really the Warlock's son."
The growling stilled into a low humming as everyone considered this. (Yes, the men in the room all left their warning engines running - just in case. The stone table was a good idea after all - at least it had a good chance of remaining intact should anyone break out in a scuffle or suddenly shift.
"I...so it's true." River looked downcast.
"It's okay River." I immediately tried to comfort him, "You can't help what you are."
The other wolves looked surprised that I said that. What? River wasn't Fount's son by choice you know. None of us got to choose stuff like that.
River nodded, "You're right again, Sam. I can't help what I am."
And then he raised his head and got all determined again, "But if you all would give me a chance, I'll do my best to be a good mate!"
"River..." How should I break this to him? "Warlocks can only mate humans. Savy - that fairy girl who is my sister, she's a purebred wolf."
"There must be some mistake." Beta Lucas decided.
River nodded, "Yes, there must be some mistake. I've always just been a normal human."
I shook my head, "Yeah, sure you're human now... but even as a human, there's nothing normal about you. What if you suddenly turn warlock? What would happen to Savy then? Wolves mate for life - you can't just change your species and leave!"
Because it'll be really bad for Savy if he left. I knew that by personal experience. It's really awful when your mate walks out...
But River was still determined, "But you don't know that. I mean, I might be a human forever! Or maybe I might even be a wolf! You did say I had a mating dream! Maybe I'll have my first shift this year!"
"River, you're human. We can smell it. The fact that you can't smell yourself should be proof enough." I told him.
River got really quiet.
I turned to the elder wolves, "Do warlocks have a first shift kind of thing? Like vamps have their dark cycles or something like that?"
"That..." Alpha Gunter looked perplexed about it, "Alpha Princess, a dark cycle is quite different from a first shift."
Okay... It looked about the same to me, but I'll just take Alpha Gunter's word for it since he looked like the type who had read a lot of books in his very long lifetime.
"But I understand your question. Unfortunately, warlocks are few and there's very little known about them beyond the stories of old." Alpha Gunter proceeded to answer, "Believe me, I've searched every library in this continent, and the next one too. My son, except for his ability to wield that stone, is completely human."
See, I told you. Alpha Gunter had the words "Ancient Bookworm" written across his completely white and unwrinkled brow.
"He can use the stone?" Mrs Beta asked. Which I suppose was the more significant thing to note.
Alpha Gunter nodded, "Yes."
"He made the picnic area in our school springtime, and the trees bud and the vines grow out of the ground..." I remembered it just like it was yesterday.
"You did what?" Alpha Gunter turned sharply around, "I thought I made it clear that you should in no circumstances bring that stone to school?"
Its very funny how Alpha Gunter changes his personality whenever it came to River. Hahaha. What? Was I the only one who thought so?
"I ah... forgot. That day, I was almost late for school, and I forgot to lock the stone away." River said.
"He can do other things too." Keanu divulged, "Sometimes it can be quite destructive."
I nodded. Warlocks could do loads of big scale magical wonders.
"Can he summon a dragon?" I asked, "Or transmigrate a soul from another dimension into our world?"
Because of all the stories about warlocks, those were the coolest tricks.
"Eh, what?" River looked somewhat lost, "A dragon? I can't say I've ever tried..."
"It's better you don't." Keanu advised, "You know how these things never quite work out the way you want it."
"What do you mean?" I asked. The picnic area worked out pretty perfectly if you asked me.
"Well, uh..." River scratched the back of his head, "That one time in school, that was the exception. Most of the time, something goes wrong whenever I use the stone."
Oh.
"Like really, really, wrong." Keanu added, so we didn't get the wrong idea, "Disastrously, requiring the fire brigade and multiple healers wrong."
"It's not always that bad!" River quickly said, "That kind of mess only happens when I try to do a big kind of magic."
"Like changing winter to spring?" I asked. Because that sound pretty big to me.
"Uh yeah." River admitted, "Come to think of it, we were pretty lucky nothing went wrong."
"That was reckless!" Alpha Gunter scolded, "I had hoped to have taught you better, son. Think of the lives of your school friends and teachers that you had put at risk!"
"It's fine, it's fine. Young wolves will lose their recklessness with age." I reassured Alpha Gunter with something my Grandpa Alpha often said.
Alpha Gunter narrowed his eyes at me and then heaved another wintry sigh. Poor guy... he was going to lose all his cool if he kept sighing like that.
"No, Dad. You're right. I'm sorry." River said, "I just wanted so much to change Sam's opinion of the vampires... "
Now everyone looked at me like it was all my fault, so I felt I should clarify, "My opinion was that vampires are bad."
That's right people, I WAS THE SENSIBLE ONE IN THIS RELATIONSHIP. I know you think I was usually the crazy radical stupid one, and yes, I had a irrefutable track record for causing trouble, but let me just clarify, when I was with River, HE was the troublemaker, NOT me.
"And I still stand by that." I told River firmly, "You haven't changed my mind about them in the lest."
But then River gave me those sad puppy dog eyes, "Oh."
And I felt bad and ended up admitting, "The only thing that had changed... is that now I believe that with enough power, we can cover the evil with good."
Which I realized just as the words left my mouth that this was important. I was the alpha. I will protect everyone's happiness.
I stood up now, "Today, we have a possibly angry warlock who may or may not come to our packland to retrieve his lost life stone."
"What?" More than one wolf exclaimed. I guess my betas didn't explain everything when they called the emergency meeting.
"Don't interrupt me." I held up my hand, I was on an Alpha-roll right now. Remembering my purpose helped me suddenly feel like I was exactly where I was supposed to be, "And figure out what to do with River for trespassing our lands, and bringing the stone here, and turning out to be Savy's soulmate, AND possibly turning into a warlock."
"Savy." River tested the name on his tongue, "Is that her name?"
"It's..." Then I changed my mind, "I'm not telling you her name. No one is going to tell you her name. Go ask her yourself!"
And then I realized I was distracted, "And don't distract me! I'm making my inspiring speech here."
Ben rolled his eyes, "Was that supposed to be inspiring?"
"It will be if you guys stop interrupting me!" I flared.
And to my chagrin, my wolves laughed. Even the elder ones.
Not hahaha loudly, more like low chuckles and quiet smiles, like if you were watching a video of something fluffy doing something super cute. Alpha Gunter looked mildly confused. Poor guy, in this Rome, the wolves were crazy.
"Yes, yes, Alpha Princess, please." Gamma Endo waved his hand in mock gallantry, "Please inspire us."
I crossed my arms. Was this really the time to be messing with your alpha? But Night Leaf / Morning Light wolves were really one of a kind - the kind that had no concept of fear.
I sighed, "Anyway, as I was saying..."
I was rudely interrupted again, this time by my own Luna's entrance. {Mate! ~ ❤️ }
He stormed in, his hair wild and in the navy blue of our warrior jacket. Did I ever tell you how I liked this side of him too? ~ ❤️
Yes? Well, since this is my diary, I should be allowed to repeat myself as much as I like. I really liked this side of him too. ~ ❤️
Anyway, Bell stormed in without a word of apology or greeting and marched right up to me, "You're okay."
Of course I was okay. Why wouldn't I be okay?
Then he spun around to face my betas, "So what's the emergency? This better be important!"
"Luna Bell is here." Ki announced placidly, and then as if just noting Bell's attire, he inquired, "Had you returned to the Underground already, Luna? I thought you were still at the Lorent's."
"As if I have time to dally at the Lorent's!" Bell scoffed, but he had also noticed the other wolves by now, "What's going on here?"
Bell sat himself on the nearest empty chair - which was incidentally MY chair, "Update me. I don't have all day."
He put his brand new phone on the table right in front of him and leaned back in his seat as if it were a throne. And the expression he wore on his face! This would be exactly what a wolf who thought the rest of the world was beneath him would look like.
