Chapter 4: His attribute

The next day Hailey woke up at around noon shocking her ,because it has not happened in a long time. In the apocalypse one most develop to either sleep lighter or make due with little to no sleep. After all the world is filled with danger even from those you previously trust. She began to wonder what exactly is Rex's attribute. From what he told her yesterday once a mana core is formed then traits of attributes will show on the surface. At first she had her doubts but soon she realized how wrong she was. Last night having formed her Hailey started to tease Rex every so often. Curious she asked Rex what her trait would be. His answer was one word "mischievous". Misfortune could be said to be fates sometimes cruel joke to humanity. This bringing us back to this morning where Rex greeted her with a pile of meat. As they were eating Hailey's eyes wondered all over Rex's body. She was hoping he would do something that could help her guess his attribute.

So far the thing that stood out was the absolutely absurd amounts of food he ate. At first she thought that could be a trait but let go of that thought quickly. At all from the explanation he get trait seemed to be something involving the personality. Beside the fire magic he used last was intense meaning a more aggressive attribute. While Hailey thought about all of that Rex had already finished eating. Seeing that was the case she decided to ask about his future plans." To be entirely honest I have no idea. At the moment there is nothing I really want to do but for now I decided to keep teaching you magic" ,he informed her. After an entire night of think about Alex decided to stay at least for now. Hailey was of course excited to hear his decision to stay. At least she will no longer be lonely for a while.

Once their breakfast was over Rex immediately resumed their magic lessons to teach her some more spells. After a while he felt it was the time for her to get some combat experience. With that decision Alex took out to hunt some demon beasts. Originally Hailey thought it would take a while ,but Rex lead her to three as if he already knew where they were. Before she could say anything Rex already made a move to restrain them. Nine rings of fire flew from his hand with three wrapping around each of them. Hailey was stunned that his flames were different this time. If before his flame was an inferno that incinerate everything that it comes in contact with. As for this new one it was calmer and did not radiate any heat at all. Going by what he told her then attributes effects are broken into active and passive. For example misfortune is a passive effect that cast does not really need exact mana to work. However the flames he used yesterday were active need a fuel source to continue.

Before she could think about it more Rex's voice interrupted her." Your current task is to face the demonic beast one on one. Just make sure you focus on fight and leave everything else to me", he said with a confident smile. Hailey simply nodded her head and get in to position. The moment she was ready Rex released one of the demon beast. With the flame rings gone the originally calm beast flared up. A loud roar came from its mouth as it rushed towards Hailey. Slightly panicked she created a water ball before it could get too close. Rex noticed her nervousness, "calm down in a fight the last thing you want to do is panic". His words seemed to have done the trick as she stopped wasting her mana. Instead she carefully followed it movements waiting for her best chance. Finally she was to hit it once it's guard was lowered. The demonic beast could sense danger from her unfortunately it couldn't dodge in time. When the ball made contact it was sent flying back from the impact.

After that first attack hit she went on to summon a barrage of water blades. Terrifying ever attack hit there mark dealing a decent amount of damage. Even when the beast tried to dodge something would happen. For example it slip or misjudge an attacks trajectory. At last minutes later she finally managed to kill the first beast all beit with a struggle. Rex could see how tried she was so he let her rest for a while. Once she was ready to go again he released the other two one by one. By the time she face the three her combat skills improved greatly. Nodding his head Rex was pleased with her improvements. As he was about to say something to her, a group came walking toward them. The group consisted of six people in total with 4 being men and 2 women. The men have a perverted smirk on their faces as they drew closer. As for the women they were covered in bruises in addition to the lifeless eyes.

"Look what we have here. I never thought while disposing of these used up goods we would find a new one", the leader said. Hailey was instantly enraged by their words. It was obvious that they were hunters. Hunters are people who go around capturing other women. At first not many did it but it exploded with the apocalypse. As she thought about that her eyes fell on the girls stand there lifelessly. No longer able to hold back her anger she prepared to attack however Rex stopped her.

"Calm down right you have used a lot of mana so it will be hard for you to do anything. Besides I already know that want to know my attribute thus I will use this chance to show you", Rex said as he walked forward. The men looked him confused because they could tell what his appearance was like. At first they wrote it off as an ability but words changed their minds. Still they were confident since they were 4 awakened humans and the other is alone. Thinking til here they relaxed."Oh I must admit that you are impressive to not feel afraid", Rex mocked. His words pissed one of them off. Before the leader could even say anything one of the thugs came rushing forward. This guy had awakened to the ability of speed. Until today there has only been a lucky few that could even see him move. Once again that is "until today" against Rex he did not have a prayer. Rex was already in front of the man holding him by his face.

Everyone was shocked because it happened so fast no one had anytime to react. It took a second for their minds to catch up to the situation. Finally they realized what is going on and immediately moved to attack. Each one of relying a different ability ,but Rex simply used the same ability to counter them. This display shocked Hailey because it did not make his attribute any clearer. Finally after toying with the men for a while Rex decided to end things. Thus he created a small reddish black flame. Without giving them time to react the flame appeared on their bodies. Mere seconds later only thing left of them was ash. Done Rex turned to Hailey and said, "my attribute is pride or superbia".
