DEATH'S OWN

Born with an unusual birthmark, the shape of a skeleton’s head with rose patterns round about it on her neck, many believed she would only bring bad luck to those around her. This belief was solidified when two of her suitors died unexpectedly right after a visit to her home. Such a thing should come as a bother to any woman but the same could not be said about Nyx. She didn't care if the beliefs about her were true or false. She never liked any of her suitors. Her heart had always been longing for a certain man whom she was very familiar with in her childhood but ceased to appear before her the moment she entered adolescence. Since she knew him one thing was very certain about him, he was not human since he never aged. Not even once. Believing he would one day come again, Nyx was prepared to wait until the day they would meet again. But not everything goes as planned. Having a sickly mother whose only wish was to see her daughter get married and an influential suitor who didn't mind the deaths around her, Nyx soon found herself married off and her mother passed away leaving a father who dreaded her existence and a husband she never loved. **** From a distance he watched her grow, keeping his distance from her, staying within the shadows. As she aged slowly into adulthood, the mark on her neck became more prominent and so was her scent. He wanted her to grow, but when she finally came of age, he thought she would be better without him. But as time wore on and other men began to show interest in her, he could not hold back nor could he let them have her. He discarded those who had an interest in her but one of them slipped through his fingers while he was away and took her. He waited to see if she was happy with her life, with that man, if she was, then he would let her be. She would be able to live a happy life this time unlike the previous one, but everything changed when the forces from the underworld learned of her existence and her connection with him. Her husband was killed which he permitted and her life was in constant danger. Keeping the distance was no longer an option and he once again appeared before her.

What have you done?

"I am the one you are after. Take me and let them. I won't resist," Nyx still didn't let go of the pistol and clutched it even while he attempted to pull it from her grip, which was surprisingly very strong. "I am the one you blame, right? Here I am."

"You vile woman," Bobby yelled and added more strength to his arm and forcefully pulled the gun from her grip and then smacked her head with it, which caused bleeding on the side of her head and forced her to fall back to the cold floor.

"Nyx…" Mr. Anders called and went to hold her and see if her head was badly wounded.

Nyx grunted and placed a hand where she bled, looked at him, and stood up again. "I never really asked what I did to you that you would come after my father. You are willing to kill a person because of your reason, yet you call me vile," she scoffed. "Since you know I am vile, you should be smart enough to know that I mean it when I say leave or you'll not be alive to regret it."

"Nyx," Mr. Anders called. He feared what she would do, and he didn't want her to further prove these people right. It was already surprising enough that she would stand up for him but to go to such lengths… "Don't please," he pleaded. He drew closer to the mahogany desk and held onto it to aid him in standing.

"So you are going to kill us like you killed our brothers?" Roy asked. He moved closer to Bobby and held his shoulder so he wouldn't do something rash.

"You came to my home, abused my servants, beat up my father and wounded him in the process, held a gun to his head, and threatened to kill him. When I came to his rescue, I got kicked in the stomach and smacked in the head with a gun, and then received threats as well. Killing you would be seen as self-defence in this situation wouldn't it?" Nyx asked.

They took some steps back because they could feel a sudden change in Nyx. Something that they could not understand was happening.

"You said I killed your brothers. Do you have proof that I did? Or did you just assume that on your own? If someone dies after meeting with me, does that mean that I killed them? I have had just about enough of your words and insults," she took a step towards them but was held back by Mr. Anders.

"Calm down, you need to stay level-headed," he said. He could understand her anger. She never did anything, but people called her names, and he was one of these people. Yes, he knew she was not his daughter but someone else, and he never showed care or showed any form of affection towards her. All he wanted was to have her out of his life, and she knew that, but that did not stop her from calling him her father.

Nyx turned to look at her father. She didn't know why she was so worried for him, but she just knew she couldn't let him die. She didn't want to lose a father, not after losing a mother just a few days ago.

"Enough," Bobby said in anger. He couldn't believe how she had easily struck fear into them. "It does not matter whether I die here today or not, but you will die too. I will take you along with me," he still could not forget her words even now. "I want you to know what it feels like to lose those who are important to you. I want you to know and feel what I went through when he died."

Bobby raised the gun and pointed it at her as he got ready to shoot. Even at a time like this, Nyx did not panic. There was no fear in her eyes, and her stance remained the same, shielding Mr Anders, her father.

"It is time you died," Bobby said and pulled the trigger.

"Wait…" Roy shouted, but it was too late as the bullet was already travelling through the air to meet its target.

As the bullet whisked through the air, everything seemed to have slowed down, moving in slow motion, and Myx could not take her eyes off it. Her body seemed to have shut down as she stood while more images similar to those before flashed in her mind, and suddenly, she felt a tug on her arm and pushed on the side of her stomach. The next thing she felt was the cold floor and her head hitting it. Everything became a blur and a loud ringing sound in her ears, but she was sure of one thing, her father fell not long after she did.

"What have you done, Bobby? We are here for her, not the others. They were only meant to keep her here," Roy asked. He ran his hand through his hair in frustration and agitation.

Nyx could see their lips moving, but she could not hear what they were saying. Bobby took a step forward, but he was held back by Roy, who pulled on his arm. Bobby shook off Roy's head and pushed him back. He was like a possessed man.

Without much thinking or waiting to hear what was going on around her, Nyx forced her body to move forward, shielding her father, who was speedily losing blood. "FATHER...." Nyx called and went up in a kneeling position. He shouldn't have done that. She was not expecting him to do something like this knowing their relationship, but now, there was no way to reverse what had happened. "NO," Nyx shook her head in denial.

He had taken the bullet for her, and he was dying, and there was nothing that she could do to help him.

"Why? Why did you do that? Didn't you say death favours me? Then why?" She asked, accidentally pressing harder than necessary on his chest near where he had been shot, and he coughed and grunted in pain.
