Minutes into their conversation, Lucien eventually realizes that what Lemuel keeps saying has an underlying message every single time.
As they continue to keep each other company in the visiting room, they move from one topic to another. At first, like what his task there is supposed to be all about, he asks about his well-being and many other things. He encourages him to recover first and see the world outside for himself.
All in all, he's acting like a real buddy to him.
Lucien was not particularly close with Lemuel back then. Both of them only saw each other as nothing more than classmates. In fact, the only times he got to see him expressing himself openly were when he's with Anastasia.
That's why he doesn't know what to expect from this sudden change in attitude.
