Dark Mage: Hidden Genius

"These people think, that after everything they've done, after all that I've suffered through, that I'm willing to forgive and forget, just like that? No. I'll put on a smile and play nice for now, but when I get a chance? A chance to destroy all of you? I'll take it." ****** (WPC FEB 2024 Entry) Zane Syne grew up lonely and in poverty, persecuted by those around him. He used to live a happy life with his parents, until they were captured and publicly executed for being Dark Mages shortly after his 6th birthday. Zane begged on the streets for 12 years, up until his 18th birthday, where he discovered the gifts his parents left behind for him. Now awakened, armed with overpowered abilities such as forbidden dark magic, future-sight, and a seemingly infinite amount of mana, Zane will discover he is incredibly talented in magic. Enlisting in the Royal Academy for Mages, Zane will stay low-profile and hide among his peers as he takes the abuse and discrimination for being related to Dark Mages. Behind the scenes, however... Zane will slowly eat away at the kingdom of Magine, and everyone else that has caused him suffering. Hiding his darkness and acting weak, Zane will stay out of the spotlight until it's time for payback. What the world doesn't know yet.... Is that Zane Syne the Dark Mage is worse than whatever they thought his parents were. ****** The setting is a fantasy world with some modern-day elements, like clothes or other things. Please give the novel a chance before dropping! ps. The cover art is not mine, I do not own it.

Revenge... Start!

'Tomorrow's the big day.' Zane thought to himself as he walked through an alley leading to an abandoned playground. He was currently wearing a black suit and tie, white shirt underneath, of course.

If one looked closely, they would see a new… air around Zane. He walked with the confidence that someone invincible would walk with.

'Just wanna give em a chance to live.'

Exiting the alley, Zane arrived at the abandoned playground, noticing his targets there.

It was a group of boys, the same ones that had forced Zane to eat bread off the road a month prior. Of course, they harassed him a few more times during that month, whenever Zane wasn't using the Erase Presence spell.

He started walking past the group. This was his test. If they ignored him, hooray! They get to live. If they mess with him, then he gets to show off all the dark magic he learned from his dad's spellbook this past month.

He had already checked the future with his mom's amulet if he went through with his plan, and knew that he would be able to make sure he wouldn't be caught.

'Operation: Revenge…' Zane thought as he entered their eyeview. 'Start!'

Just as he expected, the moment the group saw him they called out to him.

"Hey, come over here!" The leader waved Zane over, who hid a smile as he approached them.

"What do you guys want?" Zane asked with his head a little down, acting meek.

"Nice suit." The leader's eyes glittered. "Where'd you find it?"

"I-It was my dad's…" Zane lied. "I decided to take it out for once."

The leader pretended to nod along enthusiastically. "Special occasion?"

Zane smiled a little. "You could say that."

"Well, time for a new occasion." The group began to surround Zane, who began to act scared. The leader grabbed him and shoved him against the wall, making Zane grunt. "I think your dad's suit will look better on me, I'll just wash all the dark magic out of it."

"The fuck did you just say?" Zane's eyes flashed with anger, only to be interrupted by a punch. He keeled over as the leader attacked him.

"Who do you think you're talking to?" The leader punched Zane a few more times in the face and stomach before realizing something felt off. He stepped back, shaking his fist in pain. "Why are you so…"

"Tough, huh?" Zane stood back up, revealing he was perfectly fine. His eyes were now devoid of emotion.

"The hell?" The leader was confused at the sudden change in Zane, the rest of the group inched closer, ready to jump at Zane.

"I'm on a time limit, so let's get this over with." Zane cleared his throat, his trusty red spellbook appearing out of nowhere in the air next to him.

'Time to give them a dark magic showcase.'

"What is this asshole talking about?" The leader was wary of the floating book next to Zane. If his suspicions were true…

Zane raised his fingers, making the group alert. Then, he let a little of his aura leak out, letting the group feel a fraction of his power.

"He's a mage!" One of them cried out in fear.

"Shit! Get his book, he can't hurt us without it!"

The leader ran at Zane, aiming to grab his spellbook. Too bad for the group of bullies, none of them could expect what would happen next.

"Burst."

Zane snapped his fingers, casting his spell. The leader, who was nearly at Zane, immediately exploded, showering all the boys in blood and body parts. Zane was unfazed by the blood, showing no emotion while savoring the horror on the other boys' faces.

"What's wrong?" Zane asked in a monotone voice, breaking the boys out of their shock. "Never seen dark magic before?"

The boys began to run screaming, hoping to get away from Zane. Alas, their fate was sealed when they messed with him that night.

The pages of Zane's spellbook rapidly flipped left and right as he began casting more spells.

"Idiots." Zane called after them. "No one can hear you, I already cast a silencing spell on this area hours ago."

'5 more to kill.'

"Sacrifice to Shadow!" Zane called out another spell.

Out of the boys that were running, the one nearest to Zane faced the effects of his skill. He bent over and screamed in pain as dark energy began to radiate from him.

"Dark magic!" The boy next to him screamed, falling on his back, frozen in fear.

The boy on the ground watched as his friend began to vomit a black, tar-like substance, getting it all over his clothes. The tar began to come out of all his orifices, including his eyes, nose, and ears.

The tar stuck to his body and spread, encasing the boy in it as he hopelessly struggled. Being reduced to a black statue, the boy was now dead.

Zane approached the frozen boy while the other three kept running, only to meet an invisible barrier.

"Awaken Sacrifice."

Uttering a new spell, the black statue shuddered, opening two, milky white eyes. The statue stood up before kneeling before Zane.

[Master, you have one order I can accomplish…]

The raspy, demonic voice of the statue echoed in Zane's mind. Unfazed, he nodded towards the boy on the ground.

"Tear him apart."

[Yes, Master…]

The statue pounced on the boy and began to, well, tear him apart. Zane walked away from the two, hearing the satisfying screams of terror and the splatter of blood.

The three remaining boys leaned against the barrier, the hope in their hearts disappearing with Zane's every step. One of them had already soiled himself.

"Stop looking at me like that!" Zane yelled at them, digging his nails into his palms. "You fuck with me all the time, and you're scared when I fight back. I'm the victim here!"

Behind him, the statue had completed its task. It unsummoned itself, turning into a pile of dust.

Zane stopped in front of them, recoiling for a moment. He glared at the boy who soiled himself as he covered his nose.

"Combust!"

The boy who soiled himself burst into flames, falling to the ground screaming as he was burnt to death.

Zane looked at the other two and rolled his eyes. He snapped his fingers, removing the invisible barrier behind them, making them fall over.

"Go, run off." Seeing they were still frozen, Zane clapped his hands. "Do you wanna die? Get out of here!"

Seeing the two boys get to their feet and run off, Zane smiled.

'It was getting boring, phew.'

Zane closed his left eye and pointed a finger gun at the boy lagging behind.

'Let's test my personal invention!'
