Dark Mage: Hidden Genius

"These people think, that after everything they've done, after all that I've suffered through, that I'm willing to forgive and forget, just like that? No. I'll put on a smile and play nice for now, but when I get a chance? A chance to destroy all of you? I'll take it." ****** (WPC FEB 2024 Entry) Zane Syne grew up lonely and in poverty, persecuted by those around him. He used to live a happy life with his parents, until they were captured and publicly executed for being Dark Mages shortly after his 6th birthday. Zane begged on the streets for 12 years, up until his 18th birthday, where he discovered the gifts his parents left behind for him. Now awakened, armed with overpowered abilities such as forbidden dark magic, future-sight, and a seemingly infinite amount of mana, Zane will discover he is incredibly talented in magic. Enlisting in the Royal Academy for Mages, Zane will stay low-profile and hide among his peers as he takes the abuse and discrimination for being related to Dark Mages. Behind the scenes, however... Zane will slowly eat away at the kingdom of Magine, and everyone else that has caused him suffering. Hiding his darkness and acting weak, Zane will stay out of the spotlight until it's time for payback. What the world doesn't know yet.... Is that Zane Syne the Dark Mage is worse than whatever they thought his parents were. ****** The setting is a fantasy world with some modern-day elements, like clothes or other things. Please give the novel a chance before dropping! ps. The cover art is not mine, I do not own it.

Eldritch Board Game

If someone were to look inside Zane's room at the academy right now, they would see a boy with black hair, his left eye blue while his right eye is purple, a tall, pitch-black creature made of shadow, his cape covering half the floor, and a pair of green tentacles sticking out of a pink crack in the air, all 3 of them sitting around a table covered in playing cards.

Cthulhu picked one of the cards he was holding, placing it on the table.

"Cthulhu, you can't use that card like that." Zane handed the card back to the tentacle.

"Gunther, no, these cards are discarded already." He stopped the shadow creature from picking up a card on the table.

Looking at how his two companions kept messing up, Zane sighed.

"Ok, no more poker! We don't have money anyway!"

Zane made all the cards fly into his hands. He began to shuffle the deck of cards as Gunther grunted in annoyance.

"Look, we'll play a different game." He was distracted by the sound of something plopping on the table. He looked to see a small, dusty box that read MONOPOLIZE, with a cartoonish old man on the cover.

From the crack in the air, Cthulhu made some noises that sounded like screeches.

"A game from another world?" Zane questioned. Cthulhu screeched in confirmation. "It's really popular there? Alright then."

Zane packed away the cards, taking the lid off the Monopolize box. "Let's play this board game of yours."

He took the lid off the box, pulling everything out and reading the rules.

"Ok, so we start like this…"

******

An hour later…

[You DARE send me to jail?!]

"Please roll a 5… No! Wait, how much? A THOUSAND!?"

<Qw@%$Sa@!!!(inmg&?! >

[My property!]

"Okay, draw a card… Fuck this game!"

<$$sy%^@weeee!)*!!! >

[What did you just call me, octopus!?]

<**&sweee^@swee!!! >

[That's it! I've had enough!]

Flipping the table over, Gunther stood up, conjuring a massive sword of shadow. He swung it, cutting into a tentacle. Cthulhu screeched, striking Gunther across the room with his tentacles, pinning him there.

"Gunther! Cthulhu!" Zane yelled, grabbing their attention. The two turned to Zane, slowly letting go of each other as they saw the look on his face. "You two are messing up my room!"

They looked around the room. An upturned table, scattered board game pieces, and a hole in the wall where Gunther landed. Without saying a word, Cthulhu began to fix the hole while Gunther created a shadow apron and broom, cleaning up around the table.

'Man, having otherworldly roommates is hard…' Zane sighed, sitting down on his bed. 'Playing games is off the table… along with the table. What else is there to do?'

His mind wandering, Zane decided to consult the amulet.

'Hey, amulet.' He grabbed it. 'Is there anything interesting going on today? Specifically in or around Magine Kingdom?'

[There are 2 interesting events currently occurring. Would you like to hear them?]

'Yes please.'

[The first interesting event is that one of your fellow Mages, Firenze Reaver, is currently sneaking around a restricted area here in the academy.]

'Who?'

[The boy that had four spellbooks.]

'Oh, him. Wonder why he's doing that. What's the second event?'

[Currently, a small platoon of soldiers from the Royal Army is on a mission outside the Capital. They are looking for one of the main bases of a cult called the Children of Namek. Coincidentally, one of the branch hideouts of that same cult is having a meeting right here in The Capital.]

Images of armored soldiers exploring a field appeared in Zane's mind, followed by an image of people wearing green robes gathered around a circular table, more robed people eating on long benches behind them.

"I'll pick the second event, thanks amulet." Letting go of the amulet, Zane turned to see Gunther and Cthulhu finished cleaning. "You guys wanna mess up a cult and a platoon of soldiers?"

Gunther nodded along with the tentacle next to him. Noting their confirmation, Zane left to go brush his teeth. Left alone in the room, Gunther and Cthulhu's eyes wandered to Zane's spellbook on the bed.

"Alright, let's go… What are you guys doing to my spellbook?"

Zane found Gunther and Cthulhu hunched over an open red book, looking at a page. Squeezing in between them, Zane saw that they were each drawing a diagram on an empty page.

[We are creating the contract that binds us to you.] Gunther explained as he kept writing on the page with his finger.

<Suwee@#76@hihi!! > Cthulhu screeched in agreement.

As they finished creating the contracts on Zane's spellbook, he felt a mental link be established between him and the two creatures. If he wished, he could speak to them mentally as well as be aware of their location at all times, regardless of the distance. They could also do the same towards Zane if they wished.

"Thanks guys, but we gotta go now. Gunther, I want you to go pay a visit to that platoon in the wilderness and slaughter them all."

[Hmm? Do you have enemies among the army?] Gunther asked.

"Eh, technically everyone in this kingdom is my enemy, but mostly I just want to fuck with the Royal Army. While you kill those guys, me and Cthulhu will pay a visit to that cultist meeting." Zane shrugged and began to put on his suit.

<&*&SHww@7!? >

"That's right Cthulhu, I've got a little plan in mind. This is going to be way better than us trying to kill each other over some games because we've got nothing to do."

With their plans in place, Zane cast a teleportation spell, his spellbook floating in the air, before disappearing along with Cthulhu's crack/portal. Now alone in the room, Gunther turned off the lights and locked the door before sinking into the shadows, leaving Zane's room empty.

Lanius and Lisa were relaxing on a bench on campus, with Lanius eating a sandwich.

"This academy is great!" Lanius exclaimed. "There's so much to do! The game rooms, the training fields, the cafeteria, the casual hangout spots! This place is amazing!"

Lisa, who was trying to rest after being dragged around campus all day, opened her eyes in annoyance.

"You know, this bench was amazing, too, until you ruined my peace and quiet."

She gave Lanius a side eye. The white haired boy flinched before sticking his tongue out at her.

"Booooo, you're a buzzkill, Lisa."

"Boohoo."
