Dancing with Monsters

Have you ever heard the story “The Woman with a Ribbon Around her Neck”? No? Well, aren't you in for a treat. I am a monster; from a long line of monsters. At first, I hated it, I wanted to be nothing more than a normal human... and for a few hundred years I blended in just fine with the rest of you. Mommy issues and all. But with a mother like Pandora, what can you expect? What? You've heard of Pandora? That's cute, she is nothing like how the storied have painted her. But this isn't her story, just her mess to clean up. But I digress. I grew. I learned that I could be so much more than I ever thought possible. If I was going to embrace being a monster, I would go all out. Me and my men will make sure that the humans don't need to worry about the things that go bump in the night. What Pandora released onto the world, I would take out. Feel free to leave all that messy business to us. Turning Into A Free For All

"I know enough about your House," snarled General Duncan Richards, never taking his eyes off of me.

"If you know enough, then you know nothing," I replied with a brittle smile. "House Gypsy is not here for you or your government. You want someone to raise demons for you? I suggest that you go out and ask any wannabe witch or fake gypsy. There are enough of them around. Hell, you can even do it yourself. I can't imagine it being all that hard."

I watched as the tainted man in front of me started to sputter, completely incensed that I would have the gull to speak to him like that. Tough shit. I would bring House Gypsy back to where it should be, and no one, not even this pompous man will stop me.

I took a sip of my hot chocolate, enjoying the smooth and creamy taste of it on my tongue as I waited for General Richards to find his words. Apparently, it took a while.

"Greyson! You deal with this!" shouted Richards as he slapped his hand on my desk.

"I am sorry, Richards, I have no idea what you are trying to accomplish," said Greyson with a shrug of his shoulders. He leaned back in the chair beside Richards and folded his hands over his stomach.

I watched Richards sputtering for a few minutes, hiding my smile behind my mug.

"This House was created by my mother hundreds of years ago," I said as I put down my mug and turned to stare at the dead man walking in front of me. "It was meant to protect those that had a special gift from being hunted down and killed like dogs in the street. It never had anything to do with dark magic, summoning demons, or working with local governments."

I looked at Sasha where he stood on my right-hand side. "What is the sentence for someone from any of the Houses to willingly expose our identities or work with humans?" I asked him with a smile.

"Death," he said with a shrug. "Normally after a long, drawn-out hunt in which we rip off limbs and remove organs, but at the end of the day… it is death."

"I know that you don't have any laws pertaining to humans that get involved with us on their own accord. But I am able to change that. So, what type of sentence should I hand out for a human that tries to control a monster?" I continue, raising my eyebrow. From the corner of my eye, I saw Richards shuffling in his seat and looking at Greyson as if the other man would or could interject on his behalf.

"Death," said Sasha with a shrug, and I nodded my head in agreement.

"I mean, you understand, General, don't you?" I asked, turning to look at the human in front of me. "I mean, you wouldn't be willing to have a... bottom ranked soldier… waltzing into your office demanding that you submit to him, would you?"

"New recruit," said Greyson, joining the conversation. "A bottom ranked soldier that just joined the military is called a new recruit."

"Thanks," I said to him with a smile before turning my attention back to the other man. I would still have to deal with the three soldiers quietly waiting on my couch, but I had my priorities.

"You compare me to a new recruit?" snarled General Richards, and he stood up and placed both of his palms on my desk. Leaning forward, he growled low. "I am one of the most important men in this Country; you will give me the respect I deserve."

"Huh, he could almost pass for a wolf," said a voice as the door to my office opened. I closed my eyes for a second before I recognized the voice.

"Mathew?" I asked, curious as to why he would be waltzing into my office.

"Hey, I needed to talk to you, but I don't think that this is the right time," said the werewolf with a casual shrug of his shoulders. "Impressive growl for a human. But why is he snarling at you?"

"I won't raise demons for him," I said with a shrug as I leaned back into my chair. This meeting had become a complete free for all so why not add a wolf to the mixture? Who knew when his teeth would come in handy?

"Who the fuck is dumb enough to mess with demons?" asked Mathew, a look of confusion on his face. He strolled towards me and came to stand on my left side.

"Jenny," I answered with a shrug. "And we all know I am not as good of a Head as Jenny was."

"Ha!" barked out Mathew running his hand through his hair. "Aren't you the original bloodline of the House?"

I shrugged my shoulders. I mean, I was, but at the same time, I did ignore the House for a few hundred years, so it was kind of my fault it was such a mess right now. "I like your haircut," I said out of the blue, admiring the short hair look on Mathew. I was so used to seeing him with his long, shaggy hair that it took me a few moments to realize that he had gotten it styled.

"Can we get back to me?" interrupted General Richards, still hunched over my desk. Right, he was still here.

"By all means, let's get back to you. What, exactly, do you want from me?" I asked with a sigh, no longer interested in drawing this meeting out.

"I want you to do what Jenny did," he said both straight to the point and obscurely at the same time.

"No," I replied, also straight to the point. I would not get involved with human politics nor practice dark magic.

"Then you need to die," he said as he quickly pulled out a gun and shot me in the head.

I was really getting tired of this.

Dear Readers with the patience of Saints....

I am so sorry!

It was my dad's 80th birthday like 10 days ago and he asked that his girls come home for a family reunion (half way across the country where I currently am).

And since I was there for 9 days, I am 9 days behind in all my chapters (I have 2 days to get 25 chapters written for Charm). Which meant that I had put this novel on hold until I could deal with it.

I am still not able to deal with it, but one kind reader reminded me that there were some of you waiting for an update.

I owe you 5 chapters on top of whatever my every other release timeline would have given you.

Here is 1 of 5!

Love you all!
