Chapter 10: Shadows of Uncertainty
For the rest of the evening, Kara maintained her distance from Eerik, insisting that she felt lightheaded. It seemed absurd, but for some inexplicable reason, she didn’t desire to be seen within close proximity with him. She couldn’t shake the guilt of causing Henri pain once again. Kara couldn’t help but wonder when this unending cycle of confusion and pain would finally come to an end.
It proved difficult to keep away from Eerik after the moment they had just shared, especially when his scent still clouded her senses. But before she could bridge that gap between them, she had to weave through the knots in her heart so she could clearly see who held her affection.
Her strategy involved stepping back whenever Eerik drew nearer, clasping her hands together when he reached for them, and averting her gaze whenever he sought eye contact. Kara needed a clear mind, and having Eerik close by was hindering her in more ways than one.
