Chad went to the stable where they had boarded Bill. After saddling the horse with the tack he’d purchased from Mr. Malone, Chad held out a hand to the blacksmith. Mr. Malone surprised Chad by pulling him into a tight bear hug.
“I’m going to miss you, Chadwick. I’ve enjoyed our Sundays together. Good luck to you.”
Chad closed his eyes and luxuriated in being held by the burley smithy. He accepted the man’s best wishes. With his savings, plus the small amount of money his mother had given him, Chad—western hat on his head—set out.

Arriving in Hartford, Chad made several enquiries. He learned the show had gone to Trenton, and from there to Dover. On and on Chad went. Sometimes he discovered the show’s next location easily, other times it took him several days.
