Chapter 13

Shivering, he said, “Hey.”

And Kyle turned and smiled at him. He actually smiled! There was nothing fake or put-on about it; it was genuine, infused with what Jonathan perceived as genuine happiness to see him.

Kyle rubbed up and down his arms, shivering. “It’s freezing out here. We’re both nuts, you know. They’re going to find our frozen carcasses come first light.” He shrugged and Jonathan could tell he was trying mightily to keep his teeth from chattering. “At least we’ll be campus news…maybe the stuff of campus legend. The star-crossed gay lovers who died in each other’s arms while a blizzard howled around them.”

“Is that what we are? Star-crossed? Lovers? I thought that was all behind us now, at least according to you.” Jonathan tried to keep a note of bitterness from creeping into his voice.

Kyle stared down at the floorboards of the bridge, then looked up at him. “Come here,” was all he said.
