Vol. 2 Chapter 29: The Deep Ones

Chapter 29: The Deep Ones

"Most of the Deep Ones are devoted followers of that ancient entity. Possessing eternal life, they are cold and ruthless. Aside from rituals and reproduction, they usually do not gather together."

"And that fishing village is where their hybrids live. These hybrids begin to show the characteristics of the Deep Ones around the age of twenty. As time passes, the Deep One bloodline in them becomes increasingly dominant. Eventually, their bodies and personalities fully transform into Deep Ones, and they return to the sea to live their eternal lives."

"Are you saying that even the hybrids of the Deep Ones can achieve immortality over time?" Hu Wenxu's excitement burst forth. Immortality was the pursuit of many, and now it seemed to be a standard trait of a race. The very thought made him want to dissect them immediately.

"Longevity is possible, but immortality is hard to guarantee. Without external interference, they indeed have lifespans far beyond our reach. However, they can still be killed and aren't particularly powerful. This applies to the younger Deep Ones; the older they get, the larger and stronger they become. Thankfully, those ancient Deep Ones stay deep in the ocean and rarely come out," Gao Xiaowen explained. "Moreover, the longevity of the Deep Ones might not be solely due to their bloodline but also their faith."

The first ones to receive the call divided into mermaids and Deep Ones. Mermaids abandoned their faith and now have an average lifespan of about 200 years. Though this is long by human standards, it pales compared to the near-eternal lives of the Deep Ones.

The group was no fool. With enough information, they could deduce these facts. Lu Li was particularly interested in the social structure of the Deep Ones. A group of highly intelligent beings living in the cold, dark depths of the ocean, spending their time alone except for rituals and reproduction, fascinated him.

What do they do alone at the bottom of the sea? What are their living habits? How do they communicate with other Deep Ones? These were mysteries to Lu Li, who found his ordinary life suddenly much more intriguing. Unfortunately, he didn't have the ability to live underwater and couldn't observe the Deep Ones' society firsthand.

"We must act quickly when we assault the fishing village. Most of the hybrids are no different from ordinary people before their bloodline awakens. Even those whose bloodline has awakened aren't particularly strong. Just don't let them get into the water, where their strength is greatly enhanced," Gao Xiaowen warned. She had been infected by a higher-dimensional Great Entity, causing her body, soul, and personality to mutate and granting her much information.

The group of players moved swiftly, soon approaching the fishing village from before. It was now afternoon, and they rested to regain their strength. The hybrids who had gone fishing were gradually returning. Deep Ones had a strange power over fish, making fishing easy without needing to sail far. By nightfall, they returned with substantial hauls.

As the sky darkened and the hybrids all returned, Lu Li and his companions readied themselves, planning to capture a couple of hybrids for questioning. Then they split up to carry out their tasks.

In the pitch-black night, Lu Li walked into the village with eerie steps, his figure seemingly vanishing in the shadows, making no sound and leaking no breath. Even if he stepped on twigs or other strange items while retreating, he could ensure they wouldn't break or make noise.

Lu Li first visited the home of the old woman who had taken them in. Using shadows to unlock the door quietly, he found a thin layer of dust covering the interior. Judging by the thickness, no one had lived there since the day they left.

"Have they been dealt with out of anger?" Lu Li searched the place briefly, finding nothing of value before leaving. He sneaked into a nearby house, where the owner was sleeping beside his wife. Shadows behind Lu Li formed into a sharp spike, which shot out and skewered the man in bed.

After a quick search, Lu Li continued to the next house, finally finding a hybrid with pronounced Deep One features. His body was covered in scales, and fins grew from his ears and other parts. He lay in bed, exhausted, with two women beside him. Without a sound, Lu Li approached, his shadow...

A scream from afar startled Lu Li. The hybrid in bed groggily awoke, only to have a shadowy tendril wrap around and restrain him. Before he could cry out, another tendril plunged into his mouth, silencing him. Lu Li then killed the two women beside him.

Outside, some hybrids, armed with fishing spears and other weapons, emerged. Lu Li found a fishing net, wrapped the hybrid tightly, and freed his muscles. He then charged at another hybrid, his powerful muscles allowing him to move silently. He approached from behind, twisted the hybrid's head, breaking his neck instantly.

Before the other hybrids realized what was happening, Lu Li had already moved on to the next.

Elsewhere, Gao Xiaowen, pale-faced, fully activated the power of the ghost implanted in her body. Among the three main types of power, implanted powers develop the fastest. After just three missions, she had gained several abilities from the ghost: controlling hair, casting curses, manipulating ghostly hands, and using yin energy to modify her body. Her body had also been altered by a Great Entity through a dark creature, giving her black hair and pale ghostly hands that extended from eerie places, killing hybrids in various gruesome ways.

Some hybrids, realizing the strength of their enemies, tried to flee to the sea, only to find Hu Wenxu squatting calmly by the shore, coral knife in hand. At his feet lay a hybrid with Deep One traits, writhing in pain, his muscles and organs exposed. As the hybrids approached, Hu Wenxu wiped the blood from his face and smiled. "Sorry about the noise; it's my first time dissecting this kind of creature. But don't worry, I'll make sure the rest of you stay quiet..."
