Chapter 65

Makima woke up in the middle of the night, quietly slipping away from the bed to avoid waking up the soundly sleeping Sam.

It was the night before their wedding, and she felt a sense of unease. The piece of flesh within her chest felt tight.

The cause of her discomfort was the dramatic increase in her power. Although she hadn't revealed herself to the people or disclosed her control over their security, she had managed to instill enough fear overnight to boost her power.

'The presidents and their people are afraid of the shift in power balance,' she thought. While the speed at which it happened seemed unusual, it was meant to be. Sam had proven himself powerful enough to instill fear.

Despite wondering how he grew powerful so quickly on his own, despite being human, she liked him enough not to investigate further. Perhaps they were simply created for each other. She wouldn't mind if that weren't the case. She had always wanted a family, and now that she had it, she wouldn't let go.

'At least I won't have to worry about him every time. But now, I'm losing my composure.'

Makima maintained a calm face as she stared out the window. With eyes open, she saw nothing, but she heard and smelled through the animals that filled the sky. Spies were strategically placed near important locations in other countries.

'The US president is making contact with the Gun Devil, and he's coming here. No, he's killing his way here, meaning he'll be more powerful by the time he reaches Japan.'

Makima stood in place, contemplating what she had just learned. The battle with the Gun Devil wouldn't be easy; the devil possessed skyscraper-sized rifles and bullets of the same size. A city could be obliterated instantly with one shot.

As part of her contract with the prime minister, she had to step up and take control of the situation. Many casualties were inevitable, and she didn't care about them, except for one.

She gave Sam one last look before leaving her apartment. Grabbing her phone, she contacted the prime minister.

If there was a danger to Sam, she would step up and protect him at any cost.

"We need to talk," she said as soon as the minister answered his phone.

Sam lay on his bed, waking up shortly after hearing Makima leave. Hugging his pillow, he tried to go back to sleep.

[Every time you die, you can revive as if nothing happened.]

This revelation dispelled the remaining drowsiness from his eyes. He opened them wide and sat up.

Hold up.

He certainly hadn't made a contract with a devil, and he hadn't completed a mission. The system acted too randomly and gave him something like this!? No way. This system never gave him anything for free.

Wait a second. Makima had left just an hour ago.

Meanwhile, Makima faced the prime minister. Having revealed an hour ago that she had been in control of everyone with authority over Japan's security, he had lost his sense of superiority.

If it meant one thing, it was that she could finally control him and, thus, force him to make contacts.

Having someone in control of a nation making contacts was a deal-breaker for any devil. Those in power held authority over the lives of their citizens.

If Makima wanted someone in Japan, she could force the prime minister to make contact in exchange for that person's lifespan.

For now, Makima compelled the minister to transfer any lethal damage Sam received to another citizen. If he died, someone else would die in his place.

And if she were honest, she didn't care about which human would die.

As long as it wasn't Sam, so be it.

Makima left the minister's office and returned to her hideout. She dialed her phone and called Sam.

When he picked up, she told him, "Come to the beach. We have someone waiting for us this morning."

"What's going on?" he asked.

Not wanting to waste time explaining, she said, "Just come over. You'll like it."

If there was something Sam liked, it was fighting strong devils. She had never understood his desire to fight against devils, but whenever he engaged in battle with one, he fought until he won. The only exception was when they had sex. She would definitely win over him until he collapsed.

She cut the call, not giving him time to reply or inquire further. He didn't call her back. Fair enough; he could understand how she felt.

The morning sun shone brightly, and from the ocean, a gigantic skyscraper figure floated toward them. Although it appeared as a small dot, Makima could recognize the Gun Devil from its scent.

Standing atop a building, Makima had every devil and fiend she controlled ready for the clash, herself included.

Sam appeared next to her, standing on the edge and looking at the sun. Apparently, he couldn't see the Gun Devil from this distance.

"Okay, you've made me quite curious," Sam said. "But who is that devil coming from that way?"

"So you could tell," she turned to him and smiled.

"My spine shivers when I detect a devil," Sam replied, scratching the back of his head. She noticed something different about him. He was carrying two katanas around his waist.

"I know," she replied. "Be ready to clash with the Gun Devil."
