Chapter 2

Charlotte's POV

I felt my heart beating so fast, it practically raised my blood pressure. Oh my! My throat felt dry, I needed a glass of water.

I shook my head and started in search of room fifty-two. I should forget him, and rather focus on what I came there for.

I checked the nearest room number to me. Room forty-nine. So room number fifty-two should be somewhere around here. I walked to the left side, and finally stopped by room fifty-two. I saw three men sitting on the metal chairs placed at both sides of the door. One man in his mid thirties was waiting with a grey file on his lap. The other man to his right was perusing over the papers on his hands. He seemed to be the same age as me. The other man, whom I assumed must've crossed thirty, was sitting right to the door and looked confident. On top of the door, 'Senior Manager of Financial Affairs' was written on a polished metal plate. I arranged my stack of papers in order, and sat near to the confident guy. Before I could take a look at my papers, my name was called just after a man exited the room.

My heart was beating so fast. I have to get this job!

I immediately got up from my seat and opened the door.

"May I come in, sir?"

A man in his mid-forties sat in an executive chair while pondering over a list of forms spread on his desk.

"Sure," he said, looking at me with a genuine smile.

I gave him a nervous smile.

"You must be Charlotte Rudolph," he scribbled something on a page.

"Yes."

"Please take a seat."

"It is you! Well, I've been waiting for you, Ms..."

"Charlotte, sir."

"Yes, Charlotte! Please, have a seat."

I smiled at him and took a seat.

He was a plump man with very little neck and hair on his head. His eyes sank between his eyebrows and cheekbones when he smiled.

"I never expected you to look so young when I heard the new junior manager will be appointed today," he said.

This remark of his actually made me a bit incapable since I don't have much of an experience to boast about in my resume. I've heard that to get qualified to work in this company requires a good example of experience certificates. I'm extremely lucky that I've got this job.

"Do you know why you're selected despite all those people older than you?"

I knew what he meant with the word older.

"No."

"We think that only a smart and willing person like you should be considered among all of those who were disqualified in reaching your level of providing assurance to maintain the work like no other in the interview."

That was a compliment I never expected to hear. So, that was how I'm selected then.

"Sure, sir. It is guaranteed," I replied. My face reflected assurance.

"I'm content already," he spoke. His eyes again sank.

Nice. I should be hardworking to prove my loyalty to the company.

"Daddy!"

The voice seemed so sweet and pleasant to hear. I turned to see who it was. It was the same girl I saw in the elevator! Her voice blended perfectly with her raven-haired beauty.

"I really lost my way. I went to the floor just above this. Oh! Are you my dad's assistant?"

Her giggle was infectious, enough to give anybody a sudden chill up and down the spine, and I felt it.

"Yes."

"Hope you have a bright future ahead."

Her red lips widened into a beautiful smile. She extended a hand towards me and I took it with a gentle smile.

"I'm Brianna, and you are?"

"Charlotte."

"Pleased to meet you, Charlotte."

"You too."

She gave me a courtesy smile and exited the room. She had some of the facial features of her father but more distinct and beautifully shaped.

"This will help you get adapted much better to your work. The meeting that you were informed of this morning was postponed after a week. I had already called Ms. Daniel, she will assist you around here. I hope to see you tomorrow."

"Thank you, sir."

The man gave me a smile before sinking back into his mountain of papers.

When I exited the room, Brianna was outside, sitting on one of the rows of chairs beside the office. It seems that she was busy checking out something on her phone.

"Hope to see you soon, Brianna."

She suddenly looked up to me and nodded sweetly.

"Me too."

I got into the empty elevator and waited till I reached the first floor. My mind wandered first to Brianna's astonishing beauty and her plump father, and then to the gentleman I saw earlier with the three bodyguards. Why do people look so brilliantly beautiful? It's like an ad for models.

After getting home, I immediately took a fresh shower and ate my late lunch. The day went as normal as any other day except the fact that I've finally got a job that I believe I do deserve. The image of the enigmatic but stunning man doesn't seem to clear my coast of thoughts somehow. I thought of distracting myself away from him and the effect he had on me, all to fall in vain. And then, I mentally scolded myself for forgetting it so easily. Ariana! How could I not inform her of this? Why did I even have to look for a distraction when I have a sweet responsibility to tell her of this.

Without further ado, I quickly took my phone and dialed Ariana. I couldn't wait to share this news with her.

"Hey Ariana! I've got a job!" I screamed through the phone joyfully.

"What? You did!" Ariana's energy genuinely matched mine.

"Yes. As an Assistant Manager. Would you just believe that!"

"Oh my god. I'm so happy for you! Wait."

"What?"

"This calls for a party!"
