Chapter 3

I looked at him strangely.

"Just money? That's it?"

"What do you mean that's it? You rich bitches are ridiculous. Money could change my life in an instant."

"Ok."

"What?"

He finally stopped pacing and stared at me.

"What do you mean ok?"

I shrugged like he was asking for a pen.

"I mean ok. That's not an issue."

"Wh-Well good. Where is it?"

He watched me out of the corner of his eye studying me like I was tricking him.

"I keep a safe in here. The key's in my desk."

"Well then grab it."

I shrugged like I was doing him a favor and moved the last few steps behind my desk. Sliding my hand beneath the edge of the desk I pressed the silent alarm button and sighed internally.

Now I just had to stall until the police arrived. I opened my desk drawer, purposefully not opening the right one. I pretended to shift through the things in my desk 'searching' for the key then muttered under my breath.

"I know I put it in one of these. Its got to be here somewhere."

In front of the desk, he was getting antsy again and had started pacing before peeking out the blinds at the people in the office.

"Keep looking. Try a different drawer."

I opened the next one and looked through it as well before opening the last one. I knew it was in this one and pushed it back into the corner of the drawer as I looked through it.

"The key's not here."

"What! It has to be there. Aren't you supposed to be meticulously organized?"

I kept pushing things around the drawers.

"Not really. I just pretend to be that way. I'm actually very messy."

He groaned in frustration and shook the gun at me.

"I'm done messing around. Find it. Now."

I swallowed and dug around a little more before wrapping my fingers around the small key and pulling it from the drawer. Surely it had been long enough now and the police would be here any minute.

"Got it."

"Finally, where's the safe?"

I stood up and walked to the opposite wall hitting the latch that opened the hidden safe.

"Get it open. And hurry unless you want a bullet."

I inserted the key and entered the code. Then the safe was open and I stepped aside. He walked over quickly, his eyes almost sparkling with greed but it fell to a frown almost immediately.

"What the fuck is this?"

I looked at him strangely.

"What do you mean? Its the money you wanted."

"What?!"

I was sure that the staff on the other side of the door heard him yell and hoped they wouldn't try and get in. I didn't want him to get startled and shoot myself or one of them. He dug into the safe and pulled out the money shifting through it quickly.

"This is it? There can't be more than 10 grand here!"

"There's not. It's about $6,000."

He whirled around and shoved the gun in my face the cold barrel pushing into my skin.

"What are you playing at? Where's the rest of it?"

"There isn't any more. I never keep much cash at the office."

He pushed me aside and began pacing again even more erratically than before. I caught myself from falling and straightened out my clothes just glad not to have his weapon in my face anymore.

"This can't be it. You're supposed to be super wealthy. There should be more here. I can't do anything with this. Wait, you- you must have more somewhere right?"

He spun to face me again, charging forward and pushing the gun back in my face. I swallowed and eyed the weapon nervously.

"I don't keep much in cash. This safe and the one at home are all I have on hand."

He glared down at me and with how close he was now, I could see the cold look of pure hate in his eyes.

"How much is at your place."

I shrugged and stepped backwards, putting a little distance between us.

"I don't know."

That was a lie. Of course I knew. I kept exactly $500,000 in a various safes throughout my house. But there was no way in hell I was telling him that.

"It doesn't matter. We're going to your place. Now."

He shoved the money from the safe into a bag he had apparently brought with him then pointed to the door with the barrel of the gun. I couldn't help the look of surprise that crossed my face.

"But, they'll see you if we go out there."

"I don't care. Let them call the damn cops. We'll be gone before they get here. Just stop arguing and go!"

He shoved me forward and I stumbled a little before catching myself. I moved to the door and opened it slowly, stepping out into the hall. It didn't take long for the employees to notice me and the man behind me with the gun pointed at my back.

One of the girls screamed and everyone dove behind something or ran from the room. We walked to the elevator and he pushed me in before pushing the button for the lobby.

The small ding echoed and the doors slid open. As soon as they opened, our vision was filled with flashing lights and a swarm of police officers. They screamed at him to drop the gun and he pulled me in front of him trying to use my body to shield his own. I heard him mutter under his breath that they shouldn't be here before shoving the gun against the side of my head.

"Get back! I swear to God I'll shoot her!"

One of the officers stepped forward his deep voice echoing through the lobby.

"There's no need to do anything rash here. Just let the lady go and this will all be over."

He pressed the gun to my back and I could feel the barrel vibrating as his arm shook.

"Lady? This is not a lady. This heartless bitch ruined my life and if I'm going down I'm taking her with me!"

I jumped forward instinctively but I heard the loud bang as a gun was fired. More shots went off half a second after. The searing pain came not even a moment later and I collapsed to the ground. I saw my captors body drop as well, before the officers rushed to us.

The one who had stepped forward moments before crouched in front of me and I saw his lips moving but couldn't make out what he was saying. The last thought I had before I drifted into darkness was how handsome this particular officer was.
