Chapter 19

Phoenix:

"I have good news, Mr. Phoenix Poe has been identified as a match for Mr. Dan Purple. Dan has woken up and we will be allowing you guys to come in and see him in ICU, however one person will be allowed in at a time. We will notify you."

I turn to look at Maya and think back to the conversation we had about making mistakes. But between Dan and I, the mistake I made is unforgivable. He gets to fix his, but mine can never be fixed.

"Have you thought about it?" she asks.

"Yeah."

If there is any opportunity for me to redeem myself in some way, this will probably be the first and the last.

"And?"

"I'm going to do it."

She puts her arm round my back and rests her head on my shoulder.

"You are a really good person Phoenix."

My mind wanders back to the moment when I could have stopped my car and found help for Charles, but instead I selfishly drove away.

"I'm not Maya, I promise you I am the furthest thing from good."
