Chapter six: Renewed Vigour and Encounter

The next morning Kenjiro awoke with renewed vigour. His skill had upgraded, what the Demon King had said was true. Whether he said it by accident or he wanted Kenjiro to get stronger for some reason he didn't know.

All he did know was that he was going to get stronger. Although that meant he would have to kill monsters, he wasn't hesitant to kill them. No, it's because he didn't know if he had the skills, items or stats to kill them.

But he was going to do it anyways. Although his desire for revenge was still there it wasn't as strong as when the 'incident' first happened. Right now he just wanted to get stronger to prove to himself, not even his classmates, that he was useful, he wasn't useless.

Of course he also wanted to get home, his family was still waiting for him. His loving mother, who helped him however she could, even with a lack of money that sometimes happened. And his little sister who looked up to him.

Just thinking about them gives him more motivation to get stronger and get home sooner. Although he knew it was going to be a while, that caused Kenjiro to get a little sad but he pushed past it.

But he wouldn't let this motivation to get stronger stop him from repaying back the people in the village and Eisen. So he would still go about his normal day but not get caught up in his thoughts, like he was doing now… SHIT!

Kenjiro then got out of his bed and put on fresh clothes and his mask. He looked at the mask for a second before putting it on, it still took time to get used to having a disfigured face and having to hide it.

Once he was dressed, in clothes similar to yesterday, he walked out of his room and saw Eisen was cooking food again. This time just bread. Well, if it was just bread it couldn't be considered cooking, but that didn't matter.

Kenjiro, once he was sat down, realised how stupid it was to put on his mask. How was he even supposed to eat food with it on? So with an annoyed sigh he went through the process of taking it off again.

Eisen just looked at him with eyes that told Kenjiro he wanted to laugh. It wasn't the first time this had happened, even worse the last time it happened he had tried to eat the food before realising it. So he looked like an idiot that put food up to a mask.

Eisen looked at Kenjiro strangely as they ate their food, which was a few slices of bread and their water. "What's got you so excited today?" Eisen asked curiously.

Kenjiro looked up from his food and tried surprises whatever Eisen was seeing, although he tried he couldn't really hide his excitement. If this worked, he would get stronger, get home and possibly get payback to the people that betrayed him. "I'm just motivated. The weather seems nice." He said as an excuse, his voice still hoarse and rough.

Eisen looked out one of the windows he opened up this morning and saw the day was going to be nice. There were no clouds, and the sun was shining brightly. It even put Eisen in a better mood when he saw it. It was always nice to work on a sunny day. "Yeah, I suppose that is a good reason to be excited."

Eisen collected the crumbs of his food into the palms of his hand and brushed it off out the window. "Well, I'm going to help around the town. You do what you have to do, but don't overwork yourself. I don't need you collapsing." Eisen warned him.

Kenjiro just smiled and waved him off. And Eisen nodded at that, accepting that Kenjiro would try and not overwork himself.

When Eisen left Kenjiro stayed a bit more just enjoying the peace and quiet of the house, and how he could hear some birds chirping from outside the open window.

On earth you wouldn't get this unless you were in the countryside, but here you would get it everywhere. This place was just so quiet most of the time. The loudest it would get was when the kids were awake and playing, if there was an argument or if someone was laughing really loudly.

But it was early in the morning now, the kids were still waking up, barely anyone argued here ever and everybody was too tired to laugh this early in the morning.

Kenjiro drank the last of his water before putting the crumbs of his food off the table into his hand and throwing them out the window. This world didn't have proper cleaning tools unless you were of high class, so people threw the leftovers of food out into the wild if they could and if it was small enough for the birds. And if it was too big they would give it to the animals.

Kenjiro then put his mask back on at the door, almost forgetting about it and walked out. He closed the door, but there was really no need to as no one in this town would rob each other.

His first job of the day was to take care of the animals that they had. Well, some of them. As others would be there as well.

He walked to the first gated area of the animals and saw that the others were there as well.

They were mostly men in their thirties and two teenage boys around the age of thirteen, the age that they got their first proper responsibilities and jobs.

Most of the kids, from Kenjiro had heard, stay in their home village and help around there. Or they have big dreams and try to do that, usually being an adventurer or a merchant if they knew how to do business.

"Mornin', young lad." One of the men said. He was a former adventurer who had made it up to Rank E, but could have been a Rank D if he wanted to but instead he wanted to settle down with a woman he met and went back to his home village.

They were still together but hadn't had any kids because they didn't want any yet. But Kenjiro knew that it was bound to happen sooner or later, no one left the town regularly and no one came to the town regularly so he doubted they had protection if they were doing it. Hell he doubted this world even had anything for protective sex.

"Morning, Danno." Kenjiro replied. He went over to get one of the filled up buckets with water and got a brush and some soap that was cheap to make from a basket.

His job was to clean the animals that they had, although others did it as well. And then he would have to refill the water and food for the animal.

It was the belief here that if the animal was more clean, and therefore happy, that they would produce better food when killed or wouldn't rot. Kenjiro didn't know if it was true, but he would do it anyway.

It was a long process to clean one cow as they sometimes moved and then Kenjiro had to wait until they stopped moving to continue cleaning them so he didn't mess up the land underneath them while they were moving.

Luckily he didn't have to clean the arse of the cow as he could just pour the water down it.

And then he had to clean the cow with a towel which was drying fast luckily because of the sun.

Then all the people would get shovels and clean up the waste the cows produced and put them in big buckets so they could use it for fertiliser. It was a very smelly process that Kenjiro was lucky to have a thick mask for unlike the others who just put a sheet around their face.

It was clear the adults were using it, only grimacing or complaining about very big piles or when some of it got on their clothes. While the two teenagers on the other hand complained about it very verbally but Kenjiro and the adults said nothing as they would get used to it.

Kenjiro on the other hand was like a mixture of both, he would complaining about it but because he wanted to save his voice he just complained inside his head.

"Jesus, Nessie's been takin' bigger shits every time I go here. Da fuck has she been eatin'." Danno complained as they put their work gear away for that group of animals.

The others laughed at his complaining, mostly because of the accent he talked in. Kenjiro just shook his head while laughing silently.

The next group they had to clean and change out their food for was the pigs. It was mostly the same except they just poured the water over them instead of cleaning them properly like the cows. The pigs were going to get dirty sooner so they didn't care about it.

The food they fed the pigs is the leftover food from dinner that some kids didn't eat and food that was dropped and was dirty.

Then it was to the potato farm for Kenjiro. It wasn't a big field, like the cow and pig farm, it was around the size of a room in a house.

He picked up a small wooden cup and cleaned it out first and then went around to each potato plant and watering them and replenishing water when he ran out.

The potatoes wouldn't be ready for a while, so he had to just keep watering them. Especially if it was going to be hot and dry out like today. Just by touching the soil he could feel the dryness of it.

By the time he was done with all that he worked up a sweat from the heat of the sun and had taken off his leather jacket. And the time of day, judging by the sun, Kenjiro would guess it was around five in the afternoon. He still had about an hour before having to go back to Eisen's house and get dinner.

So now was the perfect time to hunt some monsters in the forest around the village.

He couldn't take anything with him as he didn't want to damage anything, but he knew he probably needed a weapon.

He looked at the edge of the forest for something, like a sharp and thick stick. He knew it seemed stupid but it was best he could think of.

He actually did see one, so after looking around to make sure no one saw him he went to the forest.

This was going to be his first adventure, and hopefully he would actually be able to kill a monster and get stronger, and his journey wouldn't end here.

Kenjiro shook his head. No, he would kill a monster and get stronger. He wouldn't be useless. And he would prove everyone who thought he was wrong.

He went to the stick, although it was more like a branch. It wasn't that long, about the size of his forearm and it was about as thick as his arm as well. It wasn't that sharp, as he would have to put all his strength for it to actually pierce the skin but he wasn't intending on holding back, it's not like he could hold back either. If he did he might die.

So with a stick in his hand, not knowing how to hold it like a weapon he put the semi-sharp edge in front of him and held it by his side.

He walked through the forest for a bit going straight so he knew his way back, before he heard a noise to his right.

It was the sound of a twig snapping, he turned to look over there immediately holding his stick out in front of him.

He didn't see anything so he went forward that way to see why it was.

When he looked over some tall bushes and vines from the over grow of nothing being that way, he saw what made the noise.

His first sight of a monster. A goblin. A small green thing that looked like a child. It wore a loincloth around its waist and a thick club in its hand.

There wasn't just one of them though, there were two. And they were looking directly at Kenjiro, because while he was looking at them, absorbed in memorising their appearance he had accidentally stepped on a twig, like they did, and now they both knew where the enemy was.

The goblin let out what sounded like chuckles from their mouths, with their big noses sniffing the air and their long elf like ears twitching. Their mouths drooling at the chance to fight, kill and eat a human.

While Kenjiro took a few steps forward so he wasn't tangled in the vines while taking a big gulp. He was nervous, he didn't know if he was going to win. He didn't know how to fight, and they did at least to some extent.

But, while Kenjiro was taking a deep breath he thought of this, if he didn't try how would he know the answer. How would he get stronger, to see his family again. He was going to win this fight, he had to.

Hello! I know I'm supposed to do weekly uploads and I'm going to stick to that… but I wanted to inform you guys of big stuff!

I created a discord server! Yay! And I felt the need to tell you all this because it was created for the specific purpose of getting to know you guys, you know? I won't be constantly on there as I have a life outside of discord, reading and writing but yeah that's there if you want to join.

Discord: https://….discord.gg/cfuHKmYz

Just get rid of the dots before the 'discord' so that it will work.

And I also created a patreon. Of course I don't expect you guys to donate or be a patron. Especially this early into the book. I mean who knows I might just up and leave with your money! Ahahaha, joking of course.

But it won't all just be exclusive stuff, it will have character designs or where the got the inspiration for the type of clothes they wear. I currently don't have anything up there at the moment but I felt it would be good to inform you all of it, as I have no intention at the moment to stop writing this book and I hope to make it a full job.

Just get rid of the dots in the middle of the patreon and after the .com.

And I hope you guys are enjoying the book currently! See you guys next week.
