Chapter 57: Assassins in the Night

The central hall of the fortress buzzed with activity. The fortress's leadership and the mercenaries were discussing strategies and celebrating their recent victory. Victor stood to the side, observing quietly, his mind already preparing for the next challenge.

As night fell, the fortress gradually grew quieter. Exhausted from the battle, many of the inhabitants and fighters turned in for the night. Victor, however, remained vigilant, his instincts honed from years of experience.

Around midnight, as the fortress lay shrouded in darkness and silence, Victor felt a shift in the atmosphere. Something was off. His eyes narrowed, and he stepped outside, his senses on high alert.

Moving silently through the shadows, Victor scanned the perimeter. That's when he saw them—figures cloaked in black, moving with deadly precision towards the central keep. Assassins.

Victor's hand went to the hilt of his sword, and he advanced, his movements as silent as the night. The assassins, unaware of his presence, continued their approach, their target clear: the leader of the fortress.

Just as one assassin raised a blade to cut through a window, Victor struck. His sword flashed in the moonlight, and the assassin crumpled to the ground, dead before he hit the floor. The others spun around, their eyes widening in surprise.

Victor didn't give them a chance to react. He moved with lethal efficiency, cutting down two more before the remaining assassins could draw their weapons. A flurry of blades clashed in the dark, the sounds of metal on metal echoing through the night.

One assassin managed to break away, sprinting towards the keep's entrance. Victor's eyes followed him, and in a fluid motion, he drew his pistol. A single shot rang out, and the assassin fell, his body tumbling down the steps.

Inside the keep, Lyanna and a few mercenaries had been alerted by the commotion. They rushed out, weapons drawn, only to find Victor standing over the bodies of the assassins.

"What's going on?" Lyanna demanded, her eyes scanning the scene.

"Assassins," Victor replied, wiping his sword clean. "They were after the leader."

Lyanna's face hardened. "Is he safe?"

Victor nodded. "For now. But we need to secure the area. There may be more."

As they moved to fortify the keep, one of the mercenaries spoke up. "Who would send assassins here? And why?"

Lyanna frowned. "The fortress stands in a strategic location. Taking out the leader would destabilize our defenses. It's likely the work of our enemies."

Victor, however, was thinking deeper. "It's not just about the fortress. Someone knew the leader's importance and sent highly trained assassins. This isn't a simple attack; it's part of a larger plan."

As they secured the keep and ensured the leader's safety, Victor couldn't shake the feeling that this was just the beginning. The fortress was now a target, and whoever sent the assassins wouldn't stop until they achieved their goal.

The leader of the fortress, a tall, imposing man named Lord Darian, approached Victor. "I owe you my life, Black Wolf," he said, his voice steady despite the danger he had faced. "We all do."

Victor nodded. "Just doing my job. But this isn't over. We need to find out who's behind this and why."

Lord Darian agreed. "I'll have my best men on it. In the meantime, we need to prepare for whatever comes next."

As the fortress settled back into an uneasy silence, Victor found himself alone once more, standing in the shadows. The night had been long, but his work was far from done. The enemy was out there, and they would strike again. And when they did, Victor would be ready.

He glanced up at the moonlit sky, a cold determination in his eyes. The battle for the fortress had only just begun, and The Black Wolf was far from finished.
