Chapter 91

Maltheus was still struggling to his feet, while Harun had collapsed again, but it was Maltheus’ very bad luck that in all the circling he’d ended up standing to the side of the door, nearer it than the other two, but not directly in a line from it to them either. So there was nothing to make the vengeful were-dragon hold back. The queen inhaled, and then a blast of fire, blue-white and possibly even tinged with purple, gushed out from her jaws.

Kelwyn almost expected that to do nothing, but instead Maltheus let out one brief, breathless scream, and in only moments the flame had consumed him entirely, burning hair, feathers, flesh, and then bone, so that when the queen closed her jaws, only a fragments of ash fell to the already blackened floor.

Harun drew in a deep breath, his eyes clearing, and rose. He gave the queen a glance but didn’t even say a word to her before rearing up and flinging both his front paws around Kelwyn.
