After this experience, I set my next goal: I needed to get stronger to survive in this world and to do this the help from the guild was mandatory. After my friend died in front of me, while I could only stand by powerless, I understood the way this world works a little bit better. The powerful survive while the weak struggle to live and may die early.
Standing in the room, I opened the closet to search for items, that might be helpful on my journey. Apart from clothes, too big for me, there was a little pouch with some money inside. I was not accustomed to the currency here, so I did not know how much it was but assuming that the man was a farmer it could not have been much. I also found an old short-sword, it looked like it was in there for a long time, but I took it with me. There was nothing else inside the closet. I found nothing else inside this house, so I went outside.
Dawn was nearing, and the sun rose slowly in the east. The former burning homes were burned down. People with a fearful sight ran around those houses, maybe they were searching for family members or friends, but no one came near the home I was in just a few seconds ago.
Passing the people, I felt the urge to help them. With a lot of mental strength, I discarded this urge. "Get stronger, than you can help the weak," I told myself. Deep inside I knew I was lying to myself and the fear I felt now drove me to this thought.
Turning to leave the village I remembered, that I did not know in which direction the next city was. Walking to one of the friendlier adventurers I asked him for directions. Pointing to the street north he explained, that I needed to follow this road, the city was at the end.
Leaving the village behind me, I walked for half an hour and finally relaxed a little bit. The exhaustion was now noticeable, so I decided to take a break on the roadside. Leaning on a tree, I made a few glances to examine my surroundings. On the left side of the road was a river slowly flowing down, with trees beside it. On the right was a forest with tall trees, the thicked obstructed my view further inside. After I was sure there was no immediate threat nearby, I opened the CPanel. I named the character sheet CPanel.

My name was still blank, it could be because I never mentioned my name in this world, but this was only a minor problem. The personal information also told me, that I was 18 years old, but on earth, I was 28. Probably this was the cause for my strange feeling earlier. Well, 18 again, meant I had a few more years to live if not killed somewhere. Going further down I saw that my currency got updated, now I knew how much I picked up from the man, calling him friend pained me too much. My skills interested me more, a new one appeared. Freezing touch sounded useful, but what was with this limitation of one use per day, caused by my negative affinity with magic? Thinking about it for a while, I concluded, that the restriction might lift itself after I do something about the adverse effect. Next were the stats. Those should be self-explaining to a former gamer, but I did not know if seven intelligence was high or low. I decided to ask the guild after I arrived in the city, they might be able to give me an answer. I had the feeling that the stat increase in strength and agility came from the sword I picked up. Inspecting my equipment tab approved my suspicion, the list included the sword.
[Rusty old one-handed sword: After countless years of usage, this swords endurance is low. Fighting with it might result in breaking. While equipped it empowers strength and agility slightly.]
My eyes slowly closed and I fell asleep, exhaustion overtook me. The sound of a coach coming closer woke me up. It was a small one, and there should be enough place for two people. Maybe they could take me to the city. I walked on the road after getting up, in the hope that the coach would stop and took me with them. But it did not halt. Without other options, I turned north and continued to walk. The road was still muddy; it must have rained not long ago.
After walking for another half an hour, it got more crowded. There were more coaches and even people walking past me. Probably they were on the way to the village to visit relatives, or maybe they were people offering their help. But this was only an assumption on my behalf.
The city gates were now visible, on each side was a tall stone wall securing the city inside. On top of the wall were guards patrolling, they had either bows or crossbows on their backs. They wore a visored helmet, and it looked like chainmail, but I was too far away to be sure.
I reached the city gates and tried to enter, but got sopped from a guard. I could take a closer look now, and my first estimation was right, they wore chainmail with tunics bearing the symbol of the city. It was a wolf howling to the moon. The background was black with the wolf outlined in white.
"What is your objective in the city?" Asked one of the two guards standing on each side of the gate.
"I want to enter the city to visit the adventurer guild."
"Show me your identification-paper, and you may enter."
Identification-paper? Damn, I got transported to this world, it is apparent that I did not have something like this. I needed to lie, to get inside the city.
"My paper got burned while the trolls attacked Riverton."
"Oh, you are from Riverton? I heard that trolls attacked it. But I must inform you, that you can't enter the city without the identification-paper."
"Is there no other possibility to enter the city? I want to register myself as an adventurer. My family died at the hands of the trolls, only myself survived." I lied once, so why stop there? Getting inside the city was my top priority.
The guard turned to his companion and talked with him, I could not hear them, but they must have talked about my case. Facing me again, he smiled at me. Maybe my age soothed him.
"You can enter, but please follow my companion, he will show you to the registration office. There you can get a new identification-paper."
Thanking him, I followed the other guard inside. After entering the city, I was astounded. It was just like I imagined a medieval town. Tall, two floored stone buildings were lined up. Some had signs in front of it. There was an inn, and I tried to remember the location. I needed a place to sleep after I visited the guild. One building had flowers in front of it, maybe some herb, or even an alchemy store.
The people walking busy in the streets were varying, beastkin, as I saw in Riverton. A dwarf was in front of another building; the sign said Armor&Weapon. It must be like I read in some fantasy novels, the best Smith was a dwarf. The dwarf was half as tall as me; I was around 1,80m on earth. He wore an apron out of leather, beneath was a simple linen shirt. His muscles were massive, seeing him the image of Gimly from LOTR appeared to me. Long hair and a dense beard completed the stereotype. The guard watched me impatient; I must have stopped to watch the scene. Quickly following him, he led the way. He turned left after passing the smithy, after a few hundred meters he stopped in front of building with one floor.
"Here you can apply for a new identification-paper, I will be on my way back to the gate." He watched me enter the building and turned around to leave after confirming, that I went inside.
Inside the small building was a counter with a man standing behind. On the walls were candles to light the room, even there was no decoration. It seemed like paintings and such were too expensive for regular people. Moving to the counter, the man asked me: "Hello, how may I help you?"
"I need a new identification-paper, mine burned in a troll attack." He observed me suspicious, but after what felt like hours he smiled.
"Sure it will cost you 15 Copper."
Copper must be referring to the C currency I saw on my CPanel. I handed him the required money.
"Now I need your name, and to verify your identity you need to place your hand on this paper." While saying this, he took a piece of paper from beneath the counter and placed it on top.
Name? How should I call myself? With a blank space in my CPanel, I had the option to decide... Ok, I got it, I will name myself after my main character in WoW.
"My name is Shouhei."
"Quite a rare name, where are you from?"
"I come from Riverton."
He wrote my name on the paper which he placed on the counter before.
"Now you need to place your hand on top of it."
After doing this, the man spoke some words I could not understand. The paper began glowing, and I felt itchy on my palm facing the paper. The light diminished and the man told me that I could take my hand away. Inspecting the document, I saw that my stats and age, and my race as human appeared on it, the unknown part of my race missed. Neither were my skills and other information shown.
"Please take this identification-paper with you, and keep it somewhere safe. You will need it to enter the cities around here, but for villages, you probably won't have to show this." I took the document, thanked the man and left the building. Back on the street, I remembered, that I did not know where the guild was, so I turned around to ask the man. He gave me the direction, after thanking him again I strode through the city in the direction he explained.
With my identity done my target, the adventurer guild, was within reach.
