Esteban stood silently in the dissipating dust, his gaze still fixed on the spot where Tokinada Tsunayashiro had stood moments ago. His mind was a whirl of thoughts, a mix of disbelief and grim satisfaction. He even felt like something was vaguely wrong but he shrugged it off.
He could feel the toll the battle had taken, a gaping void where half his spiritual power reserves once were. His heart pounded in sync with the throbbing sense of exhaustion that flooded his veins.
Tokinada had been no simple adversary. Despite his arrogance and overconfidence, he had wielded his ancestral Zanpakuto with formidable skill, a testament to his noble blood and intensive training.
But the only reason Esteban had emerged victorious was his knowledge advantage, his memories from his past life on Earth.
He had read about the Bleach novels, about the Tsunayashiro family, and about the power of the Tsunayashiro's ancestral Zanpakuto. Those memories had been etched into his mind, giving him the foresight and strategy to face Tokinada.
Right at the beginning he had willingly expended half of his power reserves, channeling it to create a temporary seal on Tokinada's Zanpakuto. It had been a calculated risk, one that he had taken knowing it would leave Tokinada vulnerable, and him, dangerously drained.
The gamble had paid off. The ancestral Zanpakuto, the source of Tokinada's strength, was temporarily silenced. And in those fleeting seconds, Esteban had struck, exploiting the sudden gap in their power dynamics.
His Reiatsu, even depleted as it was, had been superior. Without his Zanpakuto, Tokinada was weakened, unable to withstand the onslaught.
But Esteban knew this victory was not earned through sheer strength alone. It was a triumph of knowledge, cunning, and quick thinking. He couldn't help but muse that if Tokinada had known even a little about his own abilities, things might have turned out differently.
Tokinada could have been a formidable foe, perhaps even a victor. But, fate had deemed otherwise.
"You won, huh...?", However, Aura suddenly appeared behind him, her tone and demeanor as detached and apathetic as ever. Esteban turned to face her, studying her stoic features which revealed no trace of reaction to Tokinada's demise nor his previous display of power,
He responded, a hint of exhaustion in his voice, "Yeah, I did. But it wasn't a walk in the park."
Aura acknowledged his words with a mere nod, her gaze unreadable. She then shifted the conversation in an unexpected direction, "Are you expecting me to follow you from now on too?",
Her question hung in the air, adding a layer of intensity to their exchange. Her usual dispassion was laced with an undertone of curiosity, a subtle change in her demeanor that Esteban noted.
"Indeed...", Esteban replied forthrightly, "I do expect you to join me...", His words were direct, "Don't worry. Even though Tokinada was the head of one of the most influential noble houses in the Soul Society, I am a far better choice than he.",
"He probably always relies on external powers to achieve his goals, like that ancestral Zanpakuto of his. I suspect he also saw you as nothing more than a tool to be used as well.", He talked with mild scorn while speaking about Tokinada.
A certain pride also glowed in his eyes, hinting at his confidence in his own strength. It was clear he didn't intend to use Aura as a tool or a crutch.
Esteban then properly introduced himself, "I'm Esteban Vortice. I've got my own power, my own strengths, and unlike Tokinada's borrowed might, and they will only grow naturally in the future because of who... What I am...",
There was a peculiar air of certitude around him, an assurance borne from his own self-perceived superiority.
"I don't need you to achieve my goals, Aura...", He said honestly. But there was a flicker of something else in his gaze, an unexpected softness that hinted at a deeper level of understanding, "But, I see potential in you. A potential that can help me achieve them.",
"A potential that rivals my own. Another natural-born monstrosity of Reiatsu. It's a pity to be wasted on some spoiled idiot like that guy... It's almost pity for the two of us not to join forces...", Esteban even smirked a little while looking at her, his mischievous unpredictable nature flaring up a bit.
"And with me, you won't just be another tool, you'll be a force of your own. It will be like a mutually beneficial relationship. You help me and I help you. Let's say that we become partners.",
His gaze was intense, and for the briefest moment, it seemed as though Esteban's usually unpredictable demeanor was replaced with something softer, "And there's more to it than just power. With me, you'll find genuine companionship alongside a strong purpose.", He added, a hint of promise in his words that subtly veiled his latent desire for camaraderie.
Aura remained silent for a while, her gaze on Esteban unblinking. The wind whispered secrets around them, carrying grains of sand that danced erratically before settling back to the ground.
Just like the wind, her thoughts danced in her mind, casting a new light on the man before her.
'He's not like that Tokinada...', Aura noted, the thought whispering at the back of her mind. There was a depth to Esteban, a complexity that eluded the straightforward, power-hungry sadistic, and destructive nature of the man they had just defeated.
Esteban was not simple or one-dimensional. There was more to him, much more than met the eye.
A pang of something familiar tugged at her. A sensation that reflected in Esteban's eyes, hidden deep within him. Loneliness, 'It feels real...', She realized, almost startled by the depth of the emotion. It was like looking into a mirror, the loneliness that lay within Esteban mirrored her own.
The feeling sparked a wave of empathy within her, 'He seems genuine...', Aura found herself pondering. His words, his actions, everything about Esteban spoke of authenticity.
The strange sense of appreciation he displayed towards her was inexplicable, yet, undeniably real. It was almost as if he had been seeking her out, despite their brief acquaintance.
'Is it for the chaos?', Aura wondered, her gaze narrowed in thought. The desire to cause havoc, to shake the world to its core was evident in Esteban. He was a storm, unpredictable and relentless.
But it wasn't just her power he was interested in, he desired her presence specifically, it was almost like he wanted to see how far could she go just for the hell of it.
The silence deepened around them, the world holding its breath as Aura pondered on Esteban's words. The loneliness, the inherent isolation within him struck a chord within her. It was the same solitude that she had encountered within each Hollow she had met.
A raw, deep-seated isolation that resonated with her own, 'Is it his Hollow nature...?'
In contrast, Tokinada, despite his destructive tendencies, had never displayed such emotions. His commitment to causing harm was absolute, without any semblance of the isolation unique to Hollows.
It was an irony that Esteban, a Hollow, felt more sympathetic than Tokinada, a supposed Noble Soul Reaper.
Gathering her thoughts, Aura glanced at Esteban again. He stood there, patient and expectant, his gaze locked on her. It was now time for her to respond, to voice her thoughts and decision.
Gazing at Esteban, Aura took a deep, slow breath. The air was rich with residual spiritual energy and the scent of battle, creating a backdrop as dramatic as the conversation unfolding between them.
Drawing upon her newfound resolve, Aura straightened her posture, her stoic face belying the tempest of thoughts that had led her to this decision, "I agree...", She said, her voice unwavering.
Esteban's expression remained impassive but Aura could see a glint of surprise, and was it satisfaction, flash in his eyes momentarily. It was clear that he hadn't expected her agreement to be so straightforward, despite his confident proposal. Her acquiescence marked the beginning of an unpredictable alliance.
"Where are we going now, Esteban?", Aura asked, her gaze still fixed on the fading silhouette of their previous battlefield. As a soft wind rustled past them, she awaited his response, her heart oddly calm amidst the uncertainty of their journey.
The corner of Esteban's lips twitched into a knowing smirk, his hollow eyes gleaming mysteriously, "We're going to find the man your father had joined before his demise at the hands of the Tsunayashiro family. He leads an organization of Fullbringers now."
The revelation seemed to stir something within Aura. Her normally calm eyes widened slightly, her calm exterior briefly disrupted. It was a mixture of surprise and curiosity, and maybe, just maybe, a flicker of anticipation, "Is your intention to...take over this organization?"
Esteban's smirk widened into a full-blown smile, his amusement palpable, "You catch on quick, Aura.", As they ventured forth, their conversation flowed naturally, bridging the space between them with shared secrets and plans.
Aura's past, painted with the hues of tragedy and isolation, was something she rarely discussed. However, Esteban's frankness seemed to strike a chord within her, making her open up about her origins and her Fullbringer lineage.
"I've always wondered...", Esteban mused as Aura recounted her past, "How does it feel to carry such a heritage? Fullbringer... Hollow... We're not so different, you know. We both carry within us a fragment of the monster that is the Hollow."
The memory of her father's struggle with his Fullbring powers came rushing back to Aura, adding a layer of depth to Esteban's words, "I've never thought about it that way...", She admitted, her voice thoughtful,
"To be honest, I've always found myself contemplating what it means to be 'normal', especially since my father sought to eradicate our powers. But maybe... Maybe accepting who we are is the first step to finding our place in this world."
Esteban nodded at her words, the glow in his eyes softer now, he agreed, "Indeed, Aura. Accepting our nature, embracing it...that's where our strength lies...", Their conversation lulled into a comfortable silence as they continued their journey, each lost in their thoughts.
