Threads of Favors, Departures, and Secrets

"Can I ask you a favor?"

I stood there anticipating a furrowed brow. After all, how would anyone react when a relative of a friend with whom you don't have much interaction suddenly approaches you with a request? Given Karna's nature, I expected him to fulfill my favor, as he consistently met every request made of him, particularly after his morning prayer. Despite feeling a twinge of guilt for exploiting his generosity, I have to do this.

To my surprise, Karna, just smiled warmly, "Of course, Sindhu Raj. I will fulfill any favor you ask within my capabilities", encouraging me to continue. I was astonished for a moment; in this era, spoken words or promises could not be taken back without consequence, and failure to comply would be considered as disgrace or even sin, unlike the modern era, where promises often amount to mere lip service. This meant I could now ask anything I wanted, and Karna had to comply, or it would be deemed his disgrace. This man is genuinely generous, after all, not everyone would willingly cut their own flesh to donate an armor attached from birth just because someone asked for it.

"You are truly generous, AngaRaj," I praised, briefly conflicted by my ulterior motives. "AngaRaj, presently, we are facing minor tensions on our borders with Madra and Matsya. I am about to embark on a crucial journey lasting approximately half a month. I trust that both you and Duryodhana will inspect my kingdom during this period to uncover any possible traces of the Pandavas," I paused, selecting my words thoughtfully. "If it's within your means, could you offer assistance at our borders in case of any critical situations?"

Karna, ever composed, considered my request with a thoughtful expression. He responded, "I understand the gravity of the situation, and you have my word, Sindhu Raj. Should any critical situation arise on your borders, I will do what is necessary to assist." Relieved by Karna's reassurance, I expressed my gratitude. "Thank you, AngaRaj. Your support means a great deal to me. I will definitely repay this favor, now I can travel in peace," to which Karna just smiled.

"Shall we take a walk, AngaRaj?" I suggested. "Sure," and off we went. This was an incredibly exciting experience for me. Karna, someone I've admired since the first time I read the Mahabharata, was now walking alongside me. My heartbeat couldn't help but rise slightly at the prospect. Glancing at Karna, I found him enjoying the cool breeze with a small, content smile.

"You really seem to like mornings the most," I commented. Karna smiled and replied, "Indeed, the morning always brings me a sense of calm. As they say, a new day dispels the shadows of the past night, I feel quite refreshed in the morning. And I must commend your garden, Sindhu Naresh; it's truly beautiful. Even Hastinapur's garden cannot be compared to this."

"Then you have to praise my wife for that, AngaRaj. She is the one responsible for it." As we continued our walk, our conversation touched upon various topics—from the current state of affairs to our respective kingdoms. This felt like one of the most engaging discussions I've had since my transmigration. In my new role, I had to be constantly vigilant when interacting with ministers and generals as I cannot afford to show any kind of weakness to them. Conversely, I kept my interactions with family members to a minimum to avoid potential missteps.

Following our walk, I extended an invitation to Karna to join our family prayer. This could be perceived as a strategic move, emphasizing my intent to establish a friendly relationship with him. Yet, it also underscored my sincerity, a sentiment that I hoped Karna could discern. I felt a sense of satisfaction when Karna agreed; it signaled his acceptance of my hand of friendship. Changing Karna's fate is a goal close to my heart, and to achieve that, I have to maintain regular contact, building a foundation of trust between us.

We made our way to the temple in the palace, where everyone had gathered for the prayer. As we entered, the expressions on their faces shifted as they noticed Karna accompanying me. A subtle ripple of surprise and curiosity passed among them, and they cast questioning looks in our direction. Vriddhakshatra, especially, wore a displeased expression, his disapproval evident. However, he chose not to voice his concerns, respecting his son's decision to include Karna in the family prayer.

The atmosphere in the temple held a mixture of tension and anticipation as we joined the gathering. Karna, though aware of the scrutiny, maintained his composure.

As the prayer commenced, the divine chants echoed through the temple, enveloping us in a sacred aura. I noticed Karna respectfully participating, and with each passing moment, the initial unease seemed to dissipate. The prayers served as a bridge, connecting individuals with different destinies, bound together in a shared moment of reverence.

After the prayer, as we left the temple, everyone in the family maintained a composed demeanor. Vriddhakshatra, though still harboring reservations, chose to remain silent, allowing the events to unfold as they would. I recognized the delicate balance between tradition and the evolving dynamics within the family, understanding that trust and acceptance would take time to grow.

Later, as the time came for Duryodhan, Dushasana, and Karna to depart, Dusshala, and a few important persons from the court gathered at the gates of the palace to bid them farewell. The courtyard echoed with the clatter of footsteps of the soldiers and the murmur of conversations. Dusshala and her brothers were bidding farewell to each other. The atmosphere was charged with a mix of emotions—anticipation, determination, and a tinge of melancholy.

I approached Duryodhan, exchanging pleasantries and expressing my gratitude for his presence. Despite the complexities that often surrounded our interactions, we maintained a diplomatic cordiality, understanding the significance of the alliance between our kingdoms. Duryodhan reciprocated with a nod and a few words of mutual goodwill, a diplomatic acknowledgment of the ties that bound us.

Dushasana and Karna, standing alongside Duryodhan, received the farewells of the assembly. Karna's presence seemed to draw a mixture of respect and curiosity from those who had gathered. Even in the midst of farewells, I observed the subtle undercurrents of political dynamics at play.

As the farewells concluded, Duryodhan, Dushasana, and Karna made their way towards the awaiting chariots. The air was charged with a sense of purpose as they prepared to embark on their journey which I know is going to be fruitless them. The assembly, though bidding farewell, remained watchful, aware of the challenges and uncertainties that lay ahead.

With a final exchange of nods and a few parting words, Duryodhan, Dushasana, and Karna mounted their chariots, signaling the beginning of their departure. The chariots rolled away from the palace gates.

As the dust settled, I watched the departing figures, each carrying the weight of responsibilities and destinies that intertwined in the intricate tapestry of the approaching war.

Roruka Palace- King's Court

I called for an emergency meeting with the key chief ministers, ministers, and generals.

As the assembly gathered, I stood before them, the weight of responsibility evident in my expression. Addressing the assembly, I declared, "I have to leave the kingdom on a matter of utmost urgency. However, the nature of this mission requires utmost discretion, and no one outside this chamber should be aware of my departure." I subtly released a small amount of my aura, exerting a controlled pressure on the assembly members. Yep, Aura suppression, a formidable skill possessed by warriors above the rank of Rathi, it holds the capability to subdue individuals below their respective ranks. The strength of one's aura varies among individuals. It depends on one's true strength, gained through experience, and fueled by the intensity of their bloodlust. This is also the reason, why defeating someone at rank higher that your is extremely difficult.

A murmur of surprise and concern swept through the room. Chief ministers Utsaka and Maitra, both seasoned advisors, stepped forward, attempting to dissuade me. Utsaka spoke first, "Sindhu Naresh, this is a crucial time for our kingdom. Your presence and guidance are indispensable. May I suggest delegating someone in your stead?"

Maitra added, "Indeed, my lord, traveling alone during such times is risky. We should consider the implications and strategize accordingly."

However, some generals, recognizing the potential risks, offered their advice. "If you must go, my lord, consider taking a trusted aide or a small retinue to ensure your safety. The kingdom relies on your leadership your majesty, and we cannot afford to expose you to unnecessary dangers."

Despite the well-intentioned advice, I stood firm in my decision. "This is the reason why it should be kept a secret, I appreciate your concerns, but the nature of this mission demands secrecy and solitude. Trust that I have considered the risks. I will return within half a month, and I trust that you all will manage the affairs of the kingdom efficiently in my absence."

Amidst the deliberations within the assembly, my brother Vikranta stepped forward, his gaze determined as he addressed me. "Brother, at least take me with you. Together, our strength will be a formidable shield, and the secrecy you seek can be maintained even with my presence."

I offered him a warm smile, even though we spent a little time together. His love and respect for his elder brother had genuinely touched me. Jayadratha you lucky bastard. It was indeed a privilege to have such a devoted younger sibling.

"Your presence in the kingdom is indispensable, Vikranta," I conveyed sincerely. "With you here, I can have peace of mind. The responsibility of safeguarding the kingdom, I entrust it to your capable hands, my brother." Placing my arm reassuringly on his shoulder, I acknowledged the weighty duty he now bore in my absence.

With that, let us commence with our plan.
