I tried to unlock the door with a bobby pin by twisting it expertly like my sister had taught me but it didn't open on the first try. I wiped my hands on my dress to get rid of the sweat so I could try again.
I was never one to give up easily.
Five tries later, I was frustrated and I realized that my efforts were futile. I was frustrated and I was sweating. The bobby pin broke and I sat down to try and catch my breath.
At least it had been a pleasant distraction from my boredom. After catching my breath, I sat on the floor and resumed playing chess by myself. However, I was distracted because of the grumbling in my tummy.
I was hungry and thirsty too, judging from the way my head was pounding. I groaned and lay on my back. The tiredness was taking over since I had been in that room for a couple of hours. My eyes started closing on their own accord.
Just before I could close them fully, I heard a knock on the door. I got up quickly and rushed up the stairs but not without tripping a couple of times before I got to the top. My hand hovered above the handle while I wondered whether it was really Kai on the other side.
For all I knew, someone could have found the entrance to the secret room and it was all a setup to get me to come out. I didn't see how that was possible so I took my chances and opened it. I was relieved when I saw Katana standing there.
I never thought I would be that happy to see her.
I took her in and pity settled in the pit of my stomach. She was all bruised. There were scratches all over her body that were not healing. She was also clutching her stomach where there was a wound that leaked so much blood that it soiled her clothes and fell to the floor.
She had worry etched on her features and she did not even give me a dirty look.
" It is safe to come out. Please go back to your room and stay there until further notice. Do you hear me? " She asked.
I silently nodded my head and walked past her. The room had been found by wolves and there were scratches on everything. Even on my painting and Kai's bed and even the doors. Kai was nowhere in sight and I fought the urge to ask if he was okay.
I did not want to seem attached. I paused before opening the door, listening for any sounds outside. When I heard nothing, I opened the door and left. There was blood and fur all over the floor.
No, scratch that. There were body parts everywhere. I fought the urge to vomit all over the place. I saw some vampires looking around, probably seeing if there were still any wolves left. They gave me a dirty look and I hurried to my bedroom.
I fought the urge to look down to see what happened downstairs. I knew if I did, I would regret it because there had to be more mayhem there than in the rooms upstairs. Even the stairs were littered with bodies.
It seemed like the fight had ended a while before Katana came to get me because I saw a maid coming out of my room. Her hand was in her mouth and there were tears in her eyes. She looked ready to have a mental breakdown.
" Are you okay? " I asked.
She looked shocked to see me at first. When she got over it, the tears started falling freely down her face. She looked new. They had kidnapped humans in the middle of the night to compensate for the ones that were hurt. Bastards.
These girls did not even have time to adjust before they were brought into a castle full of dead bodies and wolves. She wiped her tears and then gagged. She couldn't help vomiting all over the floor. I looked away or else I would vomit too.
" You will be fine, " I said and she nodded her head before scrambling away.
She couldn't even look me in the eye. I sighed and entered my room to find it was very clean. She had done a good job. I rushed to the bathroom and emptied the contents of my stomach in the toilet.
After that, I took a shower and got dressed. By the time I was done, the sun was at its highest peak which meant that it was noon. The fight lasted a whole night and part of the morning. I sighed and got in bed in an attempt to catch some sleep.
Miriam opened the door and came in. I rolled my eyes and crossed my arms against my chest to show that I was not impressed by her behavior.
" Are you okay? " She asked while assessing my body for wounds.
" You left me all alone to fend for myself. Don't act like you care now that I am fine. " I said with an icy tone.
She rolled her eyes and sat on the bed.
" I would never leave you all alone. Kai came and I couldn't risk him seeing me here. " She explained.
I looked into her eyes to see if there was any sign of deceit but there was none. She had to be telling the truth. Otherwise, I couldn't explain how she knew it was Kai that had saved me.
" You left me with that barbarian! " I exclaimed, looking for a reason to get angry.
" I knew you would be safe in Kai's hands. Anyways, I came to tell you something. " She said and I sat up so that I could listen to what she had to say.
She moved closer as if she was afraid that someone else in the room would hear what she was saying.
" Kai is hurt. He was bitten twice by a werewolf and if he doesn't get the cure soon, he will die. He only has a few hours to live. I thought you might want to know. "
