14.The Ball (1)

There were a lot of things going on in the mansion. There were decorations all over and there was not even a guard outside my door. They were too busy getting the castle ready.

I had been told that there was an event. Rumor was that there was a ball to take place as werewolves and vampires struck a deal.

I had already picked out a dress because I had no doubt in my mind that he would ask me to be his date. Who else would he take? That and the fact that we had grown closer over the past few days.

Every morning when I woke up, I found myself looking forward to our walks in the garden. He always kissed me passionately at the end of the walk. It felt like he was courting me and I was not a slave.

I waited in my room while basking in the memories of me and Kai. It was soon getting dark and I expected him to come in my room any minute. I made sure to look sexy on my bed so he would be more intrigued by me.

Again, I was failing the feminist community.

As the hours went by, my heart sank in my chest. If he was to take me as his date for the ball, wouldn't he have already asked me? Even though the ball was in the mansion, it meant a lot to be by his side.

A maid came into my room and I smiled at her. She smiled back and sat on my bed.

" You look disappointed, why? " She asked.

I felt embarrassed to tell her this but she and I had become good friends. She was not just a maid. At least not to me. There was only so much one could handle without someone to share it with.

" Where is Kai? " I asked.

I didn't need to tell her why I was asking for him. She already knew by how she pressed her lips into a thin line and gave me a pitiful look. She knew something I did not and quite frankly, I did not want to know what it was.

" Last I saw him, he was in his room," she said carefully like she would have rather kept her mouth shut.

I got up to leave but she held my hand. I looked into her chocolate brown eyes in warning for her to let me go. She had been a good friend of mine since she started working in the castle. She was feisty and she didn't let anything break her spirit.

Her chocolate skin still glowed even after weeks of being there. She had hope to escape and she would. We had planning it together. She befriended a guard that we were getting information out of.

Everyday, the prospect of freedom became realer.

" Miriam…" I warned.

She sighed and let me go. I felt her eyes on me as I exited my room and headed for Kai's room. With each step, I felt like going back and staying in my room. It would be embarrassing to ask a man if he was taking you as his date. But we were in the 21st Century so it was normal.

The only problem was that there was nothing normal about our situation.

My palms were sweaty by the time I was right in front of his door. I wiped them on my dress and released a breath. Just as I was about to lift my hand and knock, the door opened.

A beautiful woman came into sight. She had shiny red hair that cascaded down to her waist and gleaming green eyes. She was tall and petite. Her dress was a red gown that cascaded down to the floor and showcased her tiny waist and sexy curves.

She straightened her posture to pull my eyes from her ample cleavage. Her eyes raked my body with contempt. Clearly, she did not like what she saw.

Jealousy bubbled up in my chest as I realized that she was vampire and she was most likely who Kai was taking to be by his side.

Who wouldn't want to show off a stunning beauty in front of other people? I was plain and boring in comparison.

" What do you want? " She asked.

I raked my brain for an answer, knowing it would be embarrassing to say the real reason I was there. I finally decided to tell her the vague truth.

" I would like to talk to Kai, " I said.

" He is busy, " she answered me off-handedly.

I opened my mouth and closed it while trying to figure out what to say to her. I wanted to be rude but one mistake could cost me my life. I hated being vulnerable and weak.

" Katana? " Kai asked and came into view.

He was shirtless and he had a smile on his face. I had never seen him smile that widely before. The bitch made him smile and I didn't? How infuriating.

He saw me and gave Katana a look. She huffed and walked back inside the room.

" Did you need something? " He asked.

I got angry and shook my head. I turned to leave but he put his hand on my arm and pulled me to his bare chest. I ignored the tingles in my body and concentrated on my anger. The thought that he was showing me his good side all this time so that he could bed me infuriated me.

I was just a servant and it was clear as day at that moment. I should have never let myself get carried away.

I looked away from him but he used his other hand to pull my chin so that I was looking at him.

" What is wrong? You know you can talk to me about anything, don't you? " He said in that calm and gentle voice he always used on me.

The only difference was that I wouldn't fall for it this time.

" Nothing," I forced myself to say and pulled myself from his embrace.

He let me. I looked at him one last time and then started walking away. I didn't look behind me but I could feel his eyes on me. I closed the door to my room and started hyperventilating.

Why was I being territorial over him? I needed to learn my place. My delusion would only get my heart broken more than it already was. It might even get me killed.

I heard the familiar howl of wolves. So, the rumors were true. I got out of my room to look down and see them come in. I wish I hadn't.

There was Kai and Katana had her arm around his elbow. They greeted guests and welcomed them to the castle.

It should have been me out there greeting guests with Kai. It should have been me he introduced. Me.

As I looked at her smile, the only thought was; I had never wanted to kill someone more.
