Something touched his side. Words flew over his head. He had to keep going. Eawni was supposed to help him get to his All.
Selati’s tail flopped in the dirt. It was on the wrong side. Too much on the wrong side. He turned his head to find Eawni, but there was more dirt. Had he fallen down?
Vunei’s voice seemed to lift out of the morass of noise, close to Selati’s ear. “My friend, what happened?”
“Human,” Selati muttered and twisted. The dirt slammed into his back. A moan guttered in the back of his throat. His shoulder ached from the cold.
“We were trapped,” Udai’s voice came from the black fog closing over his eyes. The darkness waiting to swallow him whole. “A human tried to ambush us, but Selati killed it. His arm was lost in the struggle.”
“Aleledai. My All.” Selati heaved his weight over to his right. More hands landed on his body and pinned him in place.
