Chapter 100

"Is that guy some sort of wizard or what?" I ask Alice, and she smiles. I realise that isn't exactly what she wants me to see.

"You have to explain" I say and she gives a disgruntled groan. My head is already hurting me from trying to figure out exactly what is happening here. I can't start screening the marital affairs of others into this small little brain, it would explode.

She bring her voice down to something of a whisper, as she clears her throat and begins to talk. "Damianos is something of a new arrival here, we hadn't seen him anywhere near the place until last year". 

Last year Adrian and Charlotte were about to get married ,but yet it seems with Damianos's arrival something happened between them, or something shifted. I wouldn't say it was Adrian's fault that his relationship suddenly got sour.

"Charlotte has always been the sort of person to always run after money, and I'm sure even with the perfection of Damianos's face and his whole appearance, I'm pretty sure that's not what she after. That's not what she's after at all".

According to Alice, both people bear straight blood ties to the High council. I remember the woman who gave orders raving mad, she's probably going to be something of Adrian's great great great grand aunt or probably is his grandmother, who knows, but even Damiano has blood ties to her, exactly how I do not know, so that practically makes them cousins.

 All the while both of them have a chance at becoming high councillor one day. The revelation shocks me, Adrian didn't tell me exactly what was at stake here. At first I thought it was his honour, or his parents trust, and then it moved from actually being his future and his parents trust to something akin to their lives and survival in this place, but now with what Alice is telling me, it probably means he can actually gain control of this whole place.

He can gain control of millions of resources, he can gain control of some of the most powerful families in the world, and I am practically shocked by this. My mind turns around steadily to get the rest of the story by myself. I can only imagine the sort of wealth that would have clouded Charlotte's eyes, when she knows she has another way to become the wife of the high councillor without having to do it with such a goody two shoes boy she's married to.

 She's with Damianos because she wants a chance on the council. I can only imagine exactly how someone can be so greedy as to abandon someone you love, just so you can have a chance at power, have a chance at influence, and connections.

It would seem something that most people would do, but yet I cannot just find the sense in it. What is the use of all the power when your heart has gone cold and you have no conscience??.
