A Shut-in's True Power

[THIS NOVEL HAS BEEN DROPPED. READ ONLY IF YOU'RE FINE WITH QUITTING HALFWAY. Also don't buy the last 2 chapters. They're just drafts filled with random gibberish.] There was once a man who focused his entire life on "self-improvement". He learned each and every life skill anyone could think of. From cooking to swordsmanship. From cleaning to martial arts. His sole purpose in living was to perfect every life skill he could learn. To him, the more complicated a skill is to learn, the more satisfaction he finds in perfecting it. He developed his knowledge, his strength and his spirit. As time passed, his obsession only grew. He started ignoring the world around him and locked himself in his house to improve his "writing" skill, turning himself into what we call a shut-in. With no one who could intervene, he ended up overworking himself to death. However, his way of life amused a particular goddess. As such, for her own future amusement, she offered him to reincarnate in another world. The man's answer to this offer? Obviously he agreed! In a fantasy world with a new instrument called "magic", The man taking the identity of "Dusk Nightmoon" hopes to find the joy of learning even more interesting and complicated skills. However will he be able to remain as indifferent to the outside world as he was in his previous life? or will the people of this world and the dangers within, influence him to change as a person? Find out in this novel which is a mixture of fantasy, comedy and action! DISCLAIMER: This is my first novel, so I can't make any promises about it being good. I am also only doing this for fun. Still though feel free to point out any mistakes! (while being as respectful as possible or I'll get depressed) Cover art was also not created by me. I used an ai app to generate it. An Important day (2)

After having breakfast I would have liked to leave the house quickly and awaken my magic but I had to wait for a few individuals that would come with me.

The first would be my father, Stygian Nightmoon.(Yes, I came to know his name after getting my memories) Although he avoided me most of the time due to reasons I can't be completely sure about, today is a pretty important day. After all, the heir of the Nightmoon family will awaken magic today. So whether it's because of formalities or because he's interested in it himself, he told me he would come along.

The second and third would be a commoner girl and her father. Most people would think it's strange for commoners to accompany nobles on such an important day. But the truth of the matter is, due to a few reasons the Nightmoon family's status as nobles has fallen down quite a bit over the years. To the point where they're only a bit higher than commoners in status and honor.

This is why my family and the merchant's family who supplied us with various goods from the capital became pretty close even before my father's era. And since the parents get along, why not their children too? or so they thought but I don't get along with the merchant's daughter much if at all. At least I don't think so.

The merchant's name is Lucius Brightsun and her daughter's name is Dawn Brightsun. Yes, their family names are completely opposite to ours. There is a lot of history for that which I won't elaborate on yet.

Back to the topic, Lucius and Dawn will accompany us because Lucius will take his daughter to the church to awaken her magic as well.

And so I walked to the lounge to wait for the rest of my party to accompany me to face my once greatest enemy...The church. In my previous life I would never set foot there as I wasn't religious in the but now the existence of churches are much more reasonable. After all, deities are pretty much confirmed to exist in this world. The church also provides you with cheap status paper that would be otherwise expensive anywhere else and usually take good care of orphans. Unlike the ones I saw in my previous world they don't seem to be as corrupt.

'It sucks that I probably won't get to test my crow bars on corrupt and pedophilic priests as much anymore.' I thought, as a disappointed look spread across my face.

"Wait do crow bars even exist in this world....." I mumbled unconsciously. But before I could think about this matter some more the high pitched voice of a young girl interrupted my thoughts.

"Hey, Dusk! What are you mumbling about?! Tell me!" A girl my age with blonde hair and amber eyes called out to me enthusiastically.

"Tsk" I subtly clicked my tongue in annoyance.

Unfortunately, although it was subtle she noticed it .

"Hey! That isn't nice! You shouldn't be so mean to a friend!" the girl said with a pout on her face.

This girl was obviously Dawn. The one I would like to avoid even more so than my father. With adults I can hold meaningful conversations and learn something from them. But with children like her, it's an utter waste of time. Nothing she says has any value and she really doesn't get a hint that I don't want to talk or play with her.

It's nothing personal, I just don't think there's any merit in conversing with her.

"Good thing, I was mean to someone who isn't my friend, then." I replied to her as I started to leave the lounge.

"Now, now young master Dusk. Please go easy on my daughter. She just wants to play with a child her age." the voice of a man echoed as he entered the lounge with a smile on his face.

The man was Lucius.

"I apologize for my discourteous attitude towards your daughter, Mr Brightsun. I am just very nervous due to the significance of today's event." I gave an excuse while apologizing.

"No no. You don't have to apologize at all, young master! My goodness, your demeanor really doesn't suit a 6 year old." Lucius cried out in a slightly panicked look.

Well while it's true our families are close, The Nightmoon family are still nobles. So Lucius tries to maintain some level of respect in his speech when speaking with us. Though my father said it wasn't necessary Lucius still insisted.

"I will take that as a compliment, Mr Brightsun." I replied as I flashed a polite smile.

"Hey! Why can't you talk like that with me!" Dawn complained.

"Ms Brightsun, I'm afraid I do not know what you are talking about" I feigned ignorance.

"You...." Dawn looked as if she was going to throw a tantrum. Fortunately, the rough yet elegant speech of a man with white hair and grey eyes stopped her.

"It seems everyone is here. Shall we head out?" He asked as he gazed around the lounge.

The man was Stygian Nightmoon, my father.
