Chapter 6

One thing led to another, and a few days later Bobby came up with yet an additional new plan. Just across the highway—which had very light traffic anyway—there was a network of dirt tracks along the river. He could ride another mule while Fiona drove Powwow for thirty or forty minutes each day.

Since Orr believed all the animals needed daily exercise unless they were out in a large pasture, he readily agreed that Bobby could ride one. Then, Doyle asked if he could go along, too. Bobby could see Doyle did not want to let his niece out of sight. He seemed to trust Bobby and the mule, but his sense of duty and love for the little girl demanded he accompany her.

Secretly, Bobby had wondered if Doyle actually knew how to ride. Although he claimed the family had large and famous stables, the Irishman had seemed quite content to stand by and observe as Bobby put Powwow through her paces and even when Orr and Jase rode past or worked other mules in the round corral or the barnyard.
