Edwin quietly listened to Ruth without interrupting her as she told him about the stories from her childhood when she had used her power of mind manipulation and how it became dormant after she lost her mother.
"When was the first time you used it again?" He asked after grasping as much as possible for him.
"Thea and Rees came to my apartment one day when Mr Payne was ill. And I was emotionally broken at that time because I thought... I... I would lose Mr Payne." Her voice cracked at his memory.
"And Florence said something nasty about... me and Rees," Ruth whispered the last part as thinking about it also made her feel disgusted.
"What did she say?" She heard Edwin's darkened voice.
"That is not important, Edwin. Because you also know how she spurts out wrong things. But I got very very angry because she insulted my friendship with Rees and tried to plant suspicion in Thea's mind. That was the first time after I lost my mother that I used my power.
