Yuna Nate had loved just three people in her entire life. She killed two of them. Of the two, she hated one. The only being who gained the very rare compassion and empathy from the Youkai Slayer was her father, Nicolas Nate. An American soldier who, on a mission in the Land of the Rising Sun met Yuki-onna, the Snow Woman, and fell in love with the youkai. A few months later Yuna Nate came to this world.
There was no fantastic celebration, as in Lion King, but Your Humble Narrator reckon it should've been done, considering her future deeds worthy of the same glory that someone from the royal family deserves. However, there was somebody who would never agree with my nineties' animation reference.
That person was Yuki-onna.
The girl's own mother.
Clearly, Yuna Nate wasn't born human. She looks like a human girl, yes; has a very good appearance if I may say. However, she wasn't human. She was a hanyou. Half human and half youkai. A hybrid. And generally, hybrids are born with a human appearance and body especially if the youkai had also human appearance and, it's not surprising a hanyou inheriting his/her supernatural father or mother powers. But in addition to their powers the offspring gets horns.
A pair of mystical pointed bones protruding from the hybrid's head; mystics because they can be hidden from view. They can become invisible and untouchable. Every youkai has at least one horn. It's a strength and superiority symbol for them. The hybrids' children also have it. Likewise, it's a characteristic worthy of pride, although they don't reveal them all the time as youkais like to do.
However.
Yuna Nate was born with a disease. Well, I guess we shouldn't call it that, since it's not something that implies anything negative in her life... except prejudice.
The girl was born with the Wolf Syndrome.
Don't worry, humans are not born with it. This one in particular works kind of like Down Syndrome and adds an extra human chromosome inside the half-youkai. It only affects one thing; the imposing horns turn into wolf ears. They protrude like a pair of horns; except they are wolf ears. And to top it off, they cannot be hidden. They're always visible and touchable.
When Yuki-onna saw that... she decided to kill the newborn.
Unlike the youkai wild reasoning, a human being with all his mental functions at work and the minimum of ethical behavior would never let his daughter be killed by her own mother a few minutes after she had just come to life. And as a very well-trained soldier, it wasn't too much of a doubt for Nicolas Nate to run away with his child in his arms.
He took refuge in the vicinity of Mount Fuji with a master of mystic arts he knew. This wizard camouflaged himself with Yuna's scent so her mother wouldn't find her easily. It only lasted five years.
On 2005 spring break, Snow Woman found them.
As I don't know the details, I can't tell you how the fight between Nicolas and the wizard against Yuki-onna was. What I do know is Yuna was hidden in a bomb shelter below the hut of her father's acquaintance.
When the fight was almost over, in his last moments on earthly plane the Wizard opened the shelter and the child left. Her innocent dark blue eyes saw her mutilated father and the master of mystic arts crawling without his legs.
I say from experience Yuna always had an imaginative mind. At that scene, the child raised the hands to her wolf ears on her head. It was the masterful blow of guilt hitting the hanyou. After that, her brain dragged the image of her mother from the deepest place and linked it with all the hatred inside Snow Woman's head.
Even so, deep down, Yuna still loved her mother. Although she understood the problem, still hoped to be accepted by her mother. It was her dream. But, what she really wanted to do was to beat the shit out of her mother. She would kill all youkais she found on her way.
For five years, it's unknown who raised Yuna and where she got educated and treated like a normal child. That's all she told me; didn't elaborate it, didn't say any names, didn't mention any places. She says it was no one important and changes the subject, or makes it clear with some gesture that persisting in the topic can end up killing you.
At ten, Yuna was found by Mena Kitsune. She joined AAA and got trained precisely to avenge her father's death and prove her superiority to her mother.
At fifteen, Yuna killed Yuki-onna and won the title of Youkai Slayer. In fact, it was during that winter vacation I met her.
In 2016 summer vacation, just over seven months after killing Snow Woman, just over seven months after we met, Yuna Nate won another title. Perhaps it's more like a simple nickname compared to the position of a supernatural killer. Anyway, what happened in August of that year, what she endured in that August was more than enough to be remembered by a certain god as the Crystal Knight.
And about Nicolas Nate, he was one of the biggest obstacles for the hanyou in The Happy Hour Operation. That's the name I gave to that mission where Your Humble Narrator purposely involved Yuna Nate in the whole situation.
