Chapter 14- Attention doesn't mean caring

Slowly opening her eyes, Dongmei was still feeling dizzy as she looked around the room with blurry vision. She found herself again in the ward. She forced herself to sit and folded her knees. Her wavy hair was opened and entangled which made her more uncomfortable.

She looked at her hand which was wrapped with a fresh bandage. It didn't her for a while but when she moved them to get a glass of water, it started giving her thorny pain. She cried silently without making any noise and soon gave up on taking water for herself.

Her weak fragile body could not bear to be left unsupported and she leaned against the pillow behind her back. Now that she was alone all sorts of thoughts started rushing in and making her more miserable. Her heart was hurting more than the physical wound.

She had never even dreamt that her sweet family would turn hostile against her that too to this extent. What made them so cruel? If she goes back to when it all started, it was indeed on her 18th birthday. They had celebrated her birthday in a 7-star hotel with their relatives and Lin Family. It was a banquet to which she was not invited. The birthday girl was left at home with no one attending to her.

She had to cook for herself and eat after waiting for her family to come back. Poor girl though must have organized a secret surprise for her somewhere in the mansion. Like they always did, the First time she remembered, it was in the home theater, the second it was beside the pool, and then it was in the garden and then the golf field.

They were different places but inside the bordered Mansion, which almost had every fun place a person would want to go. from private restaurants which were mostly used by the servants to hang out sometimes to the Mini Museum. But still, it lacked many things like amusement parks, stadiums, etc...

She was always pampered by her grandfather and heard her father thanking her again and again, "My daughter is a blessing to our clan." it was because she was the only female blood of the Bai clan born in 200 years.

Her mother cared for her the most, however, she was always strict with her. She had made a tight schedule and invited many great teachers and masters for her. She made her do all sorts of things, whatever crossed her mind, Shouyi made her learn it. for instance, once she was reading a magazine and read an interview with a badminton player. She made the coach of that same player come and teach Dongmei.

Dongmei, being a book worm hated sports but eventually had to master it. She even made the badminton player compete with her. Guess What? Who do you think won the game?

It was Dongmei, she won the game against a professional player after training for just six months, exactly six months. It was from then that Dongmei started doing more and more physical activities. Shouyi once asked her to play a sport again when she was sixteen. Basketball!!!! Dongmei fell sick because of basketball. It required more energy. It was since then, Badminton was the only sport she continued.

However, from that day spoiled Dongmei who was loved by everyone in her family cooked longevity for herself. It was the day when the warmth of the mansion froze into ice. It had been three years since then. She wasn't paid any attention, her birthday was no longer remembered by them.

She never received a gift all those years, Only basic needs that too which were looked after by the butler. The mansion become worse the last week when her grandfather out of blue told her that she was getting married to a man surnamed Lin.

Dongmei never confronted her family for the cold treatment she was getting except for her little brother who she spent time with. He was the source of her happiness. Shouyi never interfered with how Dongmei was teaching the boy. Since both of them were always busy with work.

Dongmei was the person who witnessed Bai An crawling, walking, running, and kicking. She made him talk and the first word he said was, "Dong Dong!!! mum...mum..." asking her for water. Dongmei teared up and hugged him while the entire family was overjoyed. That was the last time when they all had praised Dongmei for helping her mother raise her brother.

After that, no one cared about what she was teaching or doing as long as she does not talk to them. However, she ignored it. She comforted her heart saying- 'They must be busy.'

'It's not a big deal.'

'There must be a problem in the company.' Most of the time was spent on her brother Bai An, who became her life.

A nurse came inside with an injection and saw Dongmei lost in thoughts, not even noticing when she was injected and the nurse left, 'How pitiful!' she said shaking her head feeling bad for the girl. She had heard she was run from the wedding and was abandoned by her family for doing so.

Dongmei heard it and was pulled back from the abyss of thoughts. She looked around and called out in a low and feeble voice, "Water!!" But the nurse had already left. She leaned back helplessly and thought, "My father must be somewhere here."

"I have to look for him." She got excited as she spoke to herself, hopping down from the bed and pulling out the drip. She found no slipper and did not care but hurriedly ran out. She looked at the watch hanging in the lobby, "It was 12." She looked around. Not many were there and she assumed that it was midnight.

She straightened herself and walked to the reception and asked hiding her nervousness, "I want to know where Mr. Bai Qi is admitted." She tried to act like those in the dramas.

"In VVIP floor 12." The receptionist said looking up. Her eyes were glued to the computer screen, she was watching a Korean drama. "I will win the grand prize." Dongmei heard it and threw a huge smile and tried to peek at the screen, "Are you watching Mr. Queen?" The receptionist nodded looking up, "You watched it too."

"Yeah, It was when it was airing on DoWatch ." it was a famous platform for all kinds of dramas.

"You got a subscription?" She asked.

"A year subscription," Dongmei spoke feeling proud.

"Oh! I want it too," she said disappointed with her pay which could hardly afford her.

"Lemme help you!" Dongmei went inside the counter and logged her account on her device.

"Take it, You know I can use it on more than two devices."

The receptionist jumped and hugged Dongmei and said, "Are you sure? Should I pay you apart? Will you log out when you leave?" she asked pursing her lips.

"No need, I just renewed it last month."

"You can use it till it ends after 11 months," Dongmei said.

"Oh!!! you are so kind. you are giving your account to a stranger."

"Tell me if you need any help."

"I will ask the staff to be extra nice to you."

Dongmei smirked and said, "There is something, I need your help with."

"What is it? go ahead..." She said widening her eyes and enlarging her ears.

"Take me to the patient VVIP of floor 12."

The receptionist nodded and asked an intern nurse to come over. "Please escort this kind lady to the patient of VVIP floor 12."

The intern nodded with disgust on her face, thinking that she has received a bribe. Dongmei read the atmosphere and immediately said, "No! You take me. I cannot trust her."
