Chapter 9
After the final ruling, I left the courtroom, i was officially a single woman, and that idiot was left to do whatever the hell he wanted to. I rushed over to the courier service, grabbing my delivery…if only you could order another life. The box was filled with new clothing, I was changing up my wardrobe, i was only 28 but dressed like I was a retired horse.
After fitting the clothing on, I returned to the clinch for my shift, just because sis lost her husband doesn’t mean it’s the end of the world, besides I feel sorry for whoever’s going to marry that guy…he has his fair share of issues. Working abroad has always been my dream, but im too broke for that…so the new private practice I applied to work at was perfect.
“ did my resignation get approved?”
“ yes, you just have to complete your shifts left for this month and you’ll be good to go…”
I left admin, it’s been years since I wore such a dazzling smile on my face, not to mention the new designer jacket I had going on. If there’s one place I won’t miss it’ll be this tragic clinic that overworked and underpaid me.
“ you sure you want to quit, you're doing pretty well if you ask me.”
“ im still not in the springboks, besides it’ll hurt Bassam, he really misses the sport.”
“Why on earth would you sacrifice your career for a man!”
“it's not like that,” She said taking out her failed enrollment. “ there are people out there who are much more talented the I am.”
I pulled her in closer to my face, “ listen here, you’re a legend in the industry, and at the peak of your career for the sake of Allah don’t do this. Daneen, this is your dream…”
“it's also my dream to start a family…”
“but, you have so much time to do that! You can retire when you 30?”
She slides my hands off her shoulder, “ you don’t understand, I don’t want to play anymore…”
After leaving My office I called Bassam over, he agreed to meet me at an old café…
“ Asalamualikum, sister in law to be…”
“walikumsalam, don’t just stand there sit down.”
“ of course, what’s the special occasion…” he asked grabbing a menu
I grab it out of his hand rolling my eyes, “you know why you’re here, tell me how could you make Daneen give up cricket.”
“what, I swear I knew nothing about this… you're telling me shes quitting!”
“yes, she’s leaving…and how could you not know, she feels sorry that you can’t play anymore so she’s giving it up.”
“she didn't discuss any of this with me, where is she!” he asked standing
“i…at the local field I guess.”
He left the café immediately, im still confused about how the tables have turned that drastically….

He ran out of the café taking a taxi to the sports field, his car was currently getting fixed. He arrived tipping the taxi driver extra over the required amount and he ran in catching his breath. Daneen turned around confused rushing towards him with a bottle of water, he threw it to the side grabbing her by the arm as she watched him.
“Why did you tell me!”
“you met Waaliyah didn’t you?”
“she had nothing to do with this, why would you throw your career's about to go down the drain because of me…that’s what would upset me the most.”
“ Woah relax, this isn’t about you…I just don’t love the sport anymore.”
“You're lying, I know that there’s nothing more precious, more admirable in your eyes other than cricket, Daneen…don’t make a mistake.”
“Listen I have to go, your disturbing my practice.”
He watched her run back to the field as he held his hair in between his fingers, letting out a huge scream.
