Thursday Afternoon
When Kitty got home Gloria and Caroline were there eating tuna salad sandwiches with hard-boiled eggs and potato salad on the side.
Kitty sat next to Caroline. “Don’t you eat baloney or ham? I thought Mrs. Johnson said we were having ham.”
Jason pulled Kitty up on his knee. “Caroline and Gloria are Jewish. They don’t drink milk with meat or eat meat, milk, and butter together at the same meal.”
“Okay, can I have tuna fish, too?” When they finished, Gloria took Kitty upstairs and told her she had a surprise. She shepherded Kitty into her room. Gloria brought Kitty a child’s kitchen set complete with mixer and bowls. “That’s from Caroline, Alan, and me.”
Kitty ran over and hugged Gloria’s legs and kissed Caroline.
“This is too much,” Jason told her.
“Believe it or not, this isn’t expensive. It’s all plastic.” Gloria told him. “Besides, Kitty makes my life so much easier. Caroline doesn’t complain about being bored anymore.”
