Wolf among Pups

September 1

Earlier that day at Yoras University the Grand Wizard Avira Agus and the Vice Grand Wizard John Stone sit in her office discussing important matters afoot.

John Stone was an older fellow in his late 50's. He was tall and built, his hair was black with grey hairs highlighting the black. He had a big black beard and wore a grey suit, from head to toe.

"John? Hello Mr. Stone! Do you not hear what I am saying?"

John had been daydreaming and was distracted, lost in the clouds of his own mind. He turned his head towards Avira.

"Yes yes, calm down Avira, I understand that you are worried about the newcomer but I have good faith he will do fine. Although the last time we let in an X human into our school grounds, it turned for the worst, keep in good spirits. I am good friends with the boy's father and he had never lead me astray."

Avira crossed her arms and faced the window of her office and gave a sigh.

"You may be right John, but I have a feeling this won't turn out the way you hope it would. You may be friends with the Kokao family but any X human can be a danger to us all if not dealt with properly... What was that boy's name?... Rikito? What do you suggest we do if he would have another outburst, hmm? After all, he did end up burning his old school down when he was a child."

John had sat up in the leather office chair and scooted in closer to his desk. Then he gave a side-eyed look toward Avira.

"He was a child Avira, and a child with that kind of ability must be treated with care and love, not hate and malice. Or do you not remember what happened the last time we let a child like this get into the hands of the wrong people?"

Avira walked over to John's desk and firmly placed her hands on it, spooking John.

"Don't you dare chastise me, John! Of course, I remember and I refuse to let that happen again, even if that means removing any threats that could possibly occur."

John had stood up and began to head for the door, but just before leaving he turned to Avira.

"There should be no problem Grand Wizard, If I sense any threat coming from that boy, I will deal with the problem myself."

Present Day in the North West Wing of Yoras University.

Rikito and Steph had just settled into their new dorm rooms and were now eating lunch in the school cafeteria.

"This stuff is pretty good, eh? My father makes the best sweet bread around, but this is a close second."

I nodded in agreement while scarfing down the bread. Steph was devouring more and more sweet bread that we had gotten from the café ladies. The bread was warm and soft, and the smell was pleasant to the nose. We also were drinking apple wine, a delicacy here at the school. The school cafeteria was busy during the time we stayed. We ended up finishing eating and began to head to Steph's dorm room.

"This place is big, and we are only in the North West Wing. I'm kind of surprised really," I said walking the wing halls.

"Yeah, this place is nice, way nicer than the area I grew up in that's for sure."

Steph and I had talked for hours getting to know each other more, he'd grown up in a small town outside of the major city here in the capital of Gloria. From what he told me, his life was tougher than the average man, growing up with no parents and being raised by his older brother, fighting for every meal they could, barely scraping by, he said he had busted his ass trying to get into Yoras for years staying up late for academics and practicing his magic at every waking hour. It seems like it had finally paid off. I had nothing but respect for the guy. He was charming and had a very humble go lucky attitude which rubbed off on anyone he talked to. He excelled in Elemental magic and was placed at the top of his school prior for his magical ability. He even showed me videos on his phone of him performing magic in martial arts tournaments.

As we were heading up to our rooms we noticed a group of students forming a circle shouting and screaming.

"Get his ass," one person shouted

"Guys please stop! OMG, this is so embarrassing," a girl said.

We were able to close in on the group. There was a fight happening between two male students. I couldn't tell what they were fighting over but it had to have been serious due to the bloody noses and fists they had. I suggested that we passed on by them, trying not to get involved but Steph had other plans.

Steph pushed himself through the crowd and began to break up the fight.

"Stop this shit now, It's the first-day man, grow up!" He shouted ripping one student off of the other. It seemed like they weren't having any of Steph's heroism and turned and cracked Steph in the face causing him to fall back onto the ground. His nose began to bleed while his eyes began to roll into the back of his head. I couldn't just stand there and watch my first friend I made get punched so I jumped in and slugged the kid that had just punched Steph.

The student turned to me and laughed, that was never a good sign. He had picked me up and body slammed me into the ground knocking the wind out of my chest. I gasped for air before quickly receiving a punch to the face, and another once more. Before I knew it Steph had recovered and abruptly dog walked the fuck out of the two others. He had broken a bench by tossing one of the students into it, and he choked out the other with a headlock.

To be honest I had been in an array of fights growing up and I've seen a lot of heavy hitters. But Steph was different, I could see that he was a wolf among dogs in this scenario, and the bloodlust emitting from him frightened me a little. Steph stood over the student by the broken bench and knelt down on his chest and began beating his face in, with one smash after the other before we heard a loud voice come from the end of the hall.

"Hey, there is no fighting on school grounds!"

Quickly the circle of people that were acting as a barricade had been separated and we saw three students, one girl with two boys. They all wore the same uniform but it was different than the regular school attire. It was all white with a mini red cape covering the right side of their shoulders.

I overheard a girl standing in the crowd say it was the school enforcers. I guess they were meant to keep the peace between students.

"What is the meaning of this!"

Steph had completely zoned out ignoring the enforcer's words. As Steph was about to land a final blow to the student's face he was stopped without effort.

"I said to stop!" The enforcer grabbed Steph's fist and threw it to the ground, which he then pushed Steph away from the other two students.

The enforcer then turned to me and asked if I was alright, I nodded and stood to my feet. The enforcer then turned toward the crowd and addressed the situation.

"Hello everyone, I am Ardit Gashes, fourth-year student, First House ambassador of Black tiger and lead of the enforcer corp, and fifth rank wizard among students here at Yoras. These two with me are, Ashely Knight, third-year student, second House ambassador of Green Griffin, and eighth-rank wizard among students at Yoras, and Evan Guson fourth-year student, first House ambassador of Gold Dragon, sixth rank wizard among students at Yoras ."

Ardit was an olive-skinned guy, with black spikey hair, slim and about average height. Ashely was a short white girl with black hair that hung just past her shoulders. Evan was a big white boy with short brown hair and a beard.

"From here on out there will be no fighting in the school halls, this serves as a warning to you all. If we catch you again doing this dumb shit, it will be smoke between us." Ardit's words were addressing the crowd but he had glanced over at Steph and me.

"Leave this place and go to your rooms, and as for you guys, clean yourselves up you look like shit."

Ardit and the others had walked off into the distance leaving the rest of us.

I walked over to Steph and asked if he was okay, he said nothing but nodded and we walked back to our rooms. The whole time I tried to make banter with him but it was to no avail. I could tell that his anger was still manifesting inside him. Once we got back to our rooms we parted ways.

I wondered if Steph would be okay, but it made me think. How could someone who could be so nice and happy, be capable of such great violence, to which I remembered a quote from my mother.

"Oftentimes, the people who are the most dangerous are the people you'd never expect."
