Words are very powerful. For the Egyptian Gods, if you know their true names, you can force them to do anything. A similar concept also applies to humans.
When it actually comes down to it, even just knowing and using the normal name of a human gives you a decent amount of power over them. Just using it a lot in conversation hastens the process of turning from stranger to acquaintances to friends to etc. massively.
