“And
not so long ago,” Riley stated in that not-question way Curtis was beginning to
recognise.
“Yeah.
Last summer. There was this bloke…I thought things were going okay at first. But
when I started spending time at his place, it was never quite the same. He just
turned weird, he…” Fuck no, he wasn’t spewing all this out over someone
he hardly knew, especially someone he wanted to know much better! What the hell
would Riley think of him? “Well, let’s say I got stuck in this guy’s place, in
a position where I couldn’t get home on my own. I made it a kind of rule after
that to be more careful.”
“Not
to go to guys’ places. Not strangers, anyway.”
“But
everyone’s a stranger until you meet ’em, aren’t they?” Curtis remembered Phiz
telling him that once, when Phiz was trying to explain why he took such a leap
into the unknown in his relationship with Bryan. “Maybe I don’t know how to
