James being Beta meant that he was in charge of the packs safety if ever the Alpha was indisposed or unable. He had felt the change in Alpha as soon as Snow killed his best friend from childhood. James was prepared for anything and knew time was not on his side.
Snows family kept to themselves but after the human invasion some hundreds of years ago her parents were killed and she was without a home. One of the Omegas had brought her to see Alpha Black back then and as soon as she stepped into the office ( she was just a pup back then in human age you would say she was 12) Black had been taken by her. He kept her close since that day even after James begged Alpha Black not to trust her for James could see a secret she carried in her eyes. She was not a normal wolf and he just knew that she would be apart of Blacks undoing if for no other reason than for the things he did to her. He had shared his thoughts with Black only to be smacked down when the Alpha was dead set on making her his Luna even though they were not mates. Since Alpha Blacks mate/wife and only child had died durning childbirth back before the human invasion. It changed him into a cold, abusive, manic of a man and James knew he was too weak to stop him even in the darkest of times.
Therefore, torture and mistreatment of pack members became a part of life here for everyone.
Once Black laid eyes on Snow that was all he wanted and after some time and training, he took her in to his elite group of warriors. Which was made up of three wolves total that went with Black everywhere and answered only to him. Since the death of Blacks mate he had grown suspicious of everyone but not his elite. He treated his pack with such vile hatred, it was all James could do to keep the peace within the pack. Though, James could tell Snow was not interested in being Luna and he never thought her to be after power either. But now that Black is dead that is exactly what he feared and now she had all the power. James could not stand for this. He had to do something. He could not let his pack dive in to chaos and that is exactly what was going to happen now that a female was in charge.
Black had linked him when they found the human in the woods. He told James to up patrols because he was not sure if there were others or a threat was eminent. James did as he was told and also sent for two teams of pack warriors to take to the forest and scan for any threat. This did nothing since the Alpha was killed by one of his own and now the threat of a human being on pack territory was eminent since Snow linked him to tell him of her approach with the human. James knew he must do something so he waited in the shadows for the perfect moment to strike.
As James was hidden in the shadows he heard the sounds of someone running up on his location fast, faster than any normal wolf could run so he knew with certainty that it was Snow. Once the sounds were close enough he took out a potion that he had traded a dark witch for at one of the surrounding human villages a long time ago, thinking to use it on Snow if ever she got out of line, which now seemed to be that time. The dark witch had promised a quick death to any shifter as the poison was only found in the mountain range at the northern most part of the Continent. With no known cure it was sure to kill her. It was a blackish purple powder substance in a small glass vial. He uncorked the vial and poured the powder in his hand. He was told it had to be inhaled to take effect so he blew with all his might as Snow came into range. She ran right thru the cloud of poison and continued for a few more strides before she collapsed in a heap not far from him but before he could approach warriors surrounded her and carried her to the packs doctor.
' You can not be saved stupid girl....you are as good as dead now I just have to sit back and wait.' James was in his head and not paying much attention to what he was doing when the doctor came rushing out of the pack house and straight into him.
"Doc! What the Hell man, get off me."
" Sss..ooo. Sorry ." was all the doctor could get out before he quickly turned to leave.
"Wait, where are you going in a hurry? What seems to be the problem maybe I can help. " James laughed to himself because he wanted the bitch dead he would never raise a finger to help her. But, seeing the doctor in a frenzy made James worry that something did not go to plan. The Doctor seemed twitchy, eyes darting in every direction. 'He was not focused on me at the moment. ' james thought.
"Snow.... I mean Alpha Snow is unconscious because of an unknown element in her system I need to get to the elders to see if they have any ideas. Please do not worry I will not let our alpha die." he was staring James straight in the eyes like he was looking for something.
'My mind was spinning out of control. She should be dead. that poison should have killed her once her body hit the ground. What The Hell Was Happening? Unconscious??? What did that witch give me? I would find her and rip her throat out for deceiving me. I can't even think straight what do I do?'
*Doc*
At this moment James was not aware was not aware enough to make an acceptable facial expression for the doctor could see that he was genuinely shocked but there was a contempt and anger in his eyes he could not hide. This was when Doc knew he needed to get away from the beta if he had any chance of saving Snow.
"If I could Beta I need to be leaving right away"
Hoping to use the Betas momentary distraction Doc decided to speak hastily as he rushed away. Walking as fast as he could he felt it was not fast enough so he quickened his pace to a run slowing only when he reached the house of the elders. It was a Shabby looking two tiers cottage with a rustic burnt wood look. He approached the front door only for the door to open before he could take the final step to the porch. It was Lillian, one of the elders, a stout woman with skin showing the huge amount of time spent on this plane of existence. No one was sure how old she was but if Doc would hazard a guess it would be somewhere in the tens of thousands of years. Werewolves age differently than most species. Elves were the only other race to age slower than them. Well really elves stopped aging when they reach around 57 human years.
"Doc, please come in I understand the utter most urgency is in order. I have foreseen my dear Snow Injured and I know you look for knowledge in this manner." Lillian wasted no time in ushering him inside whisking him away from the other elders into a back room. Once in the room she quietly closed and locked the door before she walked over to a bookshelf and reached for a book almost out of reach for her short and stubby status. She pulled it out about an inch when a creek was heard behind the shelf and the wall opened up to a hidden door behind. She said no words only held her finger to her nose meaning to use secrecy and not to speak. I followed her down an ancient spiral stairs case leading underground. The walls were made of rock slick with moss and it smelled of rich earth. Once they reached what seemed like the bottom Lillian lead him down a hallway with 3 doors she took him to the one on the left side. He entered a room with tables scattered with what looked like a science project. Alchemy supplies littered every surface. There were shelves filled with jars holding some rather questionable items. Bats eyes, Snail tongue, belladonna, wolfs bane, the list was unimaginable. Doc was not sure what to make of everything he hoped she would answer the nagging questions he had yet to ask.
" I have the gift of foresight. No, I have not shared this with anyone other than Snow. She is like a daughter to me and I will not see her dead because of some wretched old abusive perverted old Dog who thought he could take her innocence repeatedly stripping her of her heart and leaving her bare for the world to eat her alive. NO! enough of this tyranny! It will end tonight as we save Snows life."
The doc was not expecting this outburst and his heart twinged with ache for Snow and her hard and heart shattering existence. He was not aware of the life she had been forced into but on a much deeper level he knew, but he turned his attention from it to avoid any conflict with the Alpha who was a cold hearted devil breaking the will of those around him.
" How am I supposed to save her when I don't even know what is wrong with her. " Doc was at a loss and had no idea where to start or even what questions to ask.
