Why can't I be a Proper Protagonist?!

This was supposed to be a cliché story of a man who’s average in everything, aspiring to help his poor family but got into an accident and brought into another world of fantasy where he met a goddess who gave him cheats to “survive” and every beautiful girl he met falls inlove with him so he was forced to start his own harem while doing adventures around the world. Finally bringing peace and ruling over it in the end. But No, everything went to sh*t! He just graduated, got a job and one night, woke up in a world he knows nothing about, no accident, no goddess/god meeting him, no cheats, he just slept and there he was, with nothing but the clothes his wearing in his room when he went to sleep! “Whatever! I’ve always dreamt of being the protagonist in one those stories. Maybe this is it. The Goddess may just have not noticed me.. no problem, I could wait for my cheats to arrive” This is the story of a guy who naively believe he is the protagonist. Note from Author: This is a pet project of mine and I'm still new to this. So your support including you critique whether it's positive or negative(hope my weak fragile heart can take this) would be greatly appreciated. And best of all, I hope you'll enjoy my work.

Chapter 13

"I think this spot is good enough, I don't see anyone walking around here, and we can see the camp clearly. You can go ahead and rest first Meredith".

"….so we aren't gonna do something about the bastards? I thought you have a plan since we're here, we can't waste this 'golden opportunity'…"

"Yeah, well, I've been thinking about it and I think it's better if I do it alone. Besides, if I fail, at least you'll be safe. I can't even imagine what they would do to you if you also got captured"

"Finally… I thought you we're just an idiot. I guess you do have a little of quality in you. If you wanted to do something reckless, always remember, don't bring others with you to die. Anyway, just wake me up if anything comes up"

".....yeah, ok….? Good night"

After observing the bandit encampment for a while, Nemitz already had a plan in mind, and it's so cliché he always saw it on movies, games and novels all the time, looking at it on a screen the characters makes it seem so easy the way they we're doing it. Yet now that he also intend of doing it in real life is a different story altogether and wanting to pull it off is becoming just wishful thinking on his part but after what his seen, it's the only plan he could think of. After all, this scenario is just perfect for sneaking around; slitting throats of unwary, unguarded, sleeping bandits; and more importantly, most of their crew are away, and they wouldn't even expect him to be here. The only problem is, if he could actually pull it off. He has zero experience on the matter, and all his life he never did kill anyone or anything…well, except maybe killing some insects popping out in the house or in the dorm, a few flies and mosquitoes here and there, but that's it.

"How I wish I have some powerful system right about now… tsk! Why can't I be one of those OP protagonist and not the guy who just got dumped here…"

Heaving a sigh… he finally calmed himself down a little. Reminding himself that no matter how much he'd throw a tantrum or complain, nothing would change his situation. And he just realized since coming to this godforsaken place, most of the time he's given only two choices in front of him. He either does it and give himself a chance to live another day or don't, and let others decide his fate. Having made up his mind, he decided to just risked it. If he gets captured, he could always shoot himself in the head.

Climbing a tree that would give him a good vantage point to the camp that comprises a big tent in the center likely to be their boss's, and medium size tents fit enough for 4 guys to smaller tents randomly spread out surrounding it, and after a few minutes of familiarizing himself better with the guard locations and their rotations; and the overall area.

Checking the time, it was one hour before midnight. And as usual, he's already having second thoughts if he should proceed, still haven't seen another bandit relieving someone else for guard duties also added to his hesitation, just imagining a scenario that if he actually succeeded in killing someone in their sleep, who we're supposed to change some bandit for guard duty, it's certain that someone would check on his reliever's well-being which leads to worst case scenario of alerting everyone else. Well, he isn't actually afraid of dying, what he fears is before that, what if they tortured him, he isn't accustomed to pain, he even fears getting needle shots. But convincing himself that he has no better choice, he decided if at 12 midnight, if still nothing's change he'll just gonna do it. But if they're gonna change guards in the middle of his 'operation', then he should just think of it as unfortunate and accept his fate, at worse he just gotta shoot himself in the head before he gets captured.

….

It's exactly 12 and the guards still haven't changed. Having no choice he climbed down and proceeded on crawling to a nearby tent as slowly and as silently as possible. Moving at a snail's pace while checking his surroundings every time he moves forward he finally reached the entrance of the tent. Slowly opening it, just enough to sneak a peek inside, he saw a bandit sleeping. After a few minutes of checking everything, he went inside.

Having face to face with his first victim and his first kill, he feels this dread of what his about to do is wrong. He never experienced war, but those guys are trained to kill or even just following orders, and besides its different if somebody is shooting at you, and you just shoot back. But this is different. His about to kill someone in their sleep just because this person 'might' do something to him.

So even after a few minutes of just sitting there and looking at the bandit. He is frozen of indecision and just keeps reminding himself if he doesn't do it now, why the hell did he come here in the first place.

~Shit! Let's just get this over with. This is for my own survival, besides they're slave traders, there's nothing wrong in killing these bastards, right? And if they're being given a chance they might even torture me before I get sold anyway and just remember Meredith, her fate is much worse than mine if she gets captured. So stop with the guilt trip…

After taking a few slow deep breaths, he gets ready for taking out his first kill, but whatever he did, whatever he thought, he just couldn't stop the shaking of his body, and the guilt in his heart didn't disappear, he almost vomited right there and just stopped himself in time fearing the smell might alert someone passing by. But after a few moments of getting his courage up and reminding himself of why his here, he finally did it.

What he did first is cover the mouth of the bandit as tightly as possible at the same time Nemitz's other hand sliced his throat as deeply and quick as he could. Before the bandit even had the strength to put up a fight Nemitz was already stabbing into him in a frenzy as if his running for a Guinness world record of how many stabs he could do to the poor bastard in a span of a minute, well, it was all fear that was driving him, fearing if he couldn't kill the bastard fast enough the bandit might have the chance of alerting everyone else.

As blood and guts splatter all over him, the bandit finally stopped moving. With his hand shaking uncontrollably and cold sweat all over his body. A turmoil of dark emotions is almost drowning him and a heavy atmosphere lingers inside the small tent that he couldn't help but suffocate and finally vomit.

~Damn it, get a hold of yourself.

Getting up and readying to go. Nemitz can't help noticing a small pile of clothes and sack. Almost forgetting the basics in this kind of situations especially of someone like him who literally has nothing.

Finally, releasing a small bit of tension that has been built up from all the stress his been having. He calmly checked everything he could take and use; and decided to wear a somewhat modified armor worn by the bandit which is mostly made of leather.

~Now wearing this in the dark it would be hard for them not to know I ain't one of them, right? But there's a chance that they might know each other so better to side with caution, this isn't hitmanˣ, after all.

Chuckling nervously, Nemitz tried to lighten the mood and psyched himself up but seeing his handiwork, he couldn't help feel nauseated, but just enough to stop himself from vomiting again and ruining his clothes, besides the smell is just a dead giveaway while crawling around infested with bad guys.

Peeking outside the tent if the area is clear and picking his next destination. He started crawling again to his next unfortunate victim.
