Watchful eyes

I saw her looking around. She noticed my presence again. My job was simple: keep tabs about her and make sure to report it to the madam if there is a possibility that she and the young master would meet again.

One could say that this is my life's work. I have watched her since she was a baby. The day she was taken and brought her in a different country. Until now that she is an adult. The madam doesn't want to leave it to chance. She did once, and it has backfired tremendously.

I wonder what her parents did to the madam for her to be extra cruel to this girl.

I remembered the first time I saw her. It was a day after she was taken. She was flown on a chartered plane and was commissioned to me. Madam said that I should take her to Little Havens orphanage and look for Sister Teresa. I did just that without really looking at her.

I was already at the lobby of the orphanage and was waiting for Sister Teresa when my curiosity got the better of me. I was so curious about this baby because she has not cried nor fuss since I got her. I looked under the silk swaddle that she was in and saw her beautiful eyes. Her eyes were so innocent that I hesitated in doing my job. I wanted to keep her. I was just newly married and had no children during that time and I know my wife would welcome a beautiful baby. But before I could run away with her, Sister Teresa came and greeted me. I had no choice but to give the child to her.

I watched her grow. I was very happy that Sister Teresa seemed to deeply care about her at first. I saw her always making time for Helena, teaching her and guiding her. But I soon realized the reason why she treated Helena well, she was getting money out of it. The madam once mentioned that she also sends money to Sister Teresa and her family.

That was when I started sending her presents during her birthday. They declared the day she arrived at the orphanage as her date of birth. So I would make sure to send her some toys. But I later found out, that the madam also instructed Sister Teresa to not let Helena feel that she is loved or special. So the presents that I would send her would be given to the entire kids as a communal toy or would be given to a particular kid that was cruel to Helena. When I learned about this, I stopped sending her toys. I do not want to cause her more misery.

My job was actually simple: keep tabs on her, report any unusual visitations especially if it is a foreign family and make sure to not let her meet the young master. I have succeeded with the first two and miserably failed the last. The pain that it brought Helena is something that I can never forget. That is why I am always ready to help her anonymously when she needs me.

She was my salvation in the past.

One can say that I was able to establish my company because of Helena. The money that the madam would send me every month is more than enough for me and my family so I was able to start a private investigation company. It is legal and has a lot of employees. I could have actually just passed on this job to my subordinate but I did not. I felt like I owed every success that I have to her.

I am very tensed right now. I know that it will only be a matter of time before the madam would call me and request for an update. At times, she would not call for three months but since Helena and the young master knew each other, she began asking for monthly updates.

My conscience is telling me not to tell her that they have met. I do not want to cause trouble to Helena anymore. She has suffered more than anybody at her age should have. I have always wanted to tell her of her family. Of who she really is. But I am afraid that she might hate me. That she might blame me since I have helped kept the truth from her.

I saw her getting on the car of Edison Hunt. I have been overprotective of Helena after all these years so I ran a check on this man.

Now this man has stellar background. He doesn't even have a parking ticket, doesn't drive after drinking, doesn't drive beyond the speed limit. He is also a smart aleck. Came from a long line of doctors, that ought to say something about someone's intellect. This man also had roots to where Helena originally came from. He is also good looking but he has not had a woman for the past five years. The one before that, it ended in heartbreak.

This man may look tough but his heart is as pure as a white rose. And he loves deeply. That is what I can say from the looks of it. But I have a feeling that he feels deeply for Helena. And for me, that spells trouble. If the madam learns about it, I know she would do something to cause her harm.

If that is what it would take to protect her from pain and misery again, I would be a willing accomplice. I would willingly follow madam's orders just to make sure that she is driven away from the young master. I will make sure that she doesn't go through that hell again.

I have seen her wilt. Wilted in misery and pain. I no longer want to see her lifeless and sorrowful eyes ever again. And now that she is starting again, I vow to help her. I will make sure to protect her now that she is starting to bloom again. And if that means that I will have to cause her some pain, I would just to get her away from the young master.

I was startled when my phone rang. I saw the name on the screen and this made me take a deep breath. She called earlier than usual. I saw Hunt's car pulling out of the parking space. I immediately placed my handset on speaker while I followed them out.

"Good afternoon, madam. Helena Smith is currently working as a probationary employee in the EasyLanguages Corporation." I reported without any preamble.

I just hope that Helena won't get to hurt in the following days.
