CHAPTER-8

(Saving the patient)

After my department was changed my days were going real well, It already has been 3 days and I was finally getting into my work and now I was again getting ready for going to the hospital today, that's when I remembered Dr. McKay asked me to wear my casuals also sometimes, and then I thought why not today, so I wore my olive green pants, white button down shirt and my oxford shoes and I was ready to go to hospital.

I ate my breakfast and soon reached the bus stop, took the bus to work, and now here I am again standing in front of my work place requesting the angels, to bless me with one more good day, but knowing my 'messy life' I wasn't sure if even the angles might be able to help me, but taking the thought out of my mind I went inside and then went towards the common room, wore my doctor's coat and hanged the stethoscope on my neck and went towards the patients ward.

I greeted everyone, and later that day I went for regular checkup of the patients. Everything so far was going good. The patient 101 was getting recovered goodly, and I was sure he will be discharged off in a day or two. Even patient 100 was doing good, his vitals and blood pressure were normal. I was so happy to see that the patients under me were recovering fast. Seeing your patients recovering soon, is the best thing for the doctor.

But I was not knowing my happiness will not last long, when I and Rachel were in the cafeteria talking and eating our lunch peacefully, I got a call from Miss. Mia, the attending nurse of my patients.

'Ma'am please come fast, our patient 100 has gotten a cardiac arrest, his vitals are very weak and his blood pressure is decreasing rapidly.'

'What, give me a minute I will be there, till then give him CPR, and don't leave him unattended, I am coming.'

'What happened Aubrey.' asked Rachel.

'Patient 100, he got a cardiac arrest, I need to go asap.'

'Lunch later, I am coming with you.'

'No, you eat and I'll go and check and do me a favor call Dr. Brown.'

'Ok, you go.'

I ran towards the lift as fast as I could, no matter how big or small the doctor is, experienced or an intern, there is always a fear somewhere in your heart to lose your patient and I could feel the fear right now. But I put that thought aside.

I reached the lobby where lifts were, but lifts were slowly coming downwards and I surely can't wait until then, so I took the stairs.

I ran as fast as I could thanks to the daily training that we used to get at AMC, it didn't took me much time to reach the 4th floor, where patient 100 was. When I reached there I saw Miss. Mia, the nurse, doing her best to calm the patient's wife and son, while Mrs. Collymore was giving CPR, and by the look of it she was tired, that means she had been giving CPR from at least 1 minute by now, which was not at all good sign. I took over, and started giving CPR, the heartbeat was going down rapidly, but instead of caring about it I carried on. I can't lose him, no I will not, I just need to be strong, I can do it, yes I can.

Nurse Mia: Doctor it has already been 2 minutes, I don't think we can save him.

I did not listen to her, learning about someone's death is sad but losing one of your patient's is worst, and I surely can't, never. So I carried on, on, and on.

Nurse Mia: Doctor no....

'Shut up!' I shouted.

And that's when we heard it, the sound of Holter machine, beep, beep, beep. He was all right, the heartrate was coming to normal. I turned towards Miss. Mia and said, "don't say no, until it is a no". I told Mrs. Collymore to give the patient sodium bicarbonate and 25ml glucose, for now, and do check this with Dr. Brown.

Mrs. Collymore: Ok Dr. Huxley.

'No need, do what she said, she is right.' Came Dr. Brown's voice from behind.

'Good work lieutenant.'

'Thank you sir.'

'Go rest, I'll handle further.'

'Yes sir'

While going back towards the common room, I met Rachel.

'Dude you were a blast.'

'Oh Rachel, yeah thanks, well it was my duty'

'Coffee?'

'I seriously needed it dude, thanks.'

'You're welcome.'

'Wait how did you get to know about this so fast.'

'I have my ways miss.'

'Oh, ok.'

Patient 100 and patient 101 recovered very fast after that and was discharged soon and just like that the following days went on, without problems, without me getting into mess..... or maybe not.

If it is not a mess, it is not progress
