Capter 1: Prologue: Falling

I was never one for much adventure, if I see idiots, I usually back away. Needless to say, it was my own fault for following the magical music. Seriously, it is a terrible habit of mine, whenever I hear good music, I follow my strange urge to find its source. This time, I was walking through the streets at night, on my way home from my university, where I had just started my Ph.D in robotics engineering when a beautiful violin tune captured my attention. I know it's a bad idea, but I have never been able to resist following a beautiful song to its source. Foolishly, I followed the notes to the back of a church. Then, darkness.

I woke to the sound of fabric tearing. It was dark, with an odd eerie but comforting red glow. There is a chance that I am dead, or kidnapped. Then suddenly, a bright light shone through somewhere near my eyes. I instinctively blinked a few times, but the surroundings are still oddly blurry. Before I knew what was happening, I felt an odd sensation of being pushed through a thin rubber tube. Then a stinging cold around my midriff. Then the world burst into flames. Not literally, but it may as well as have been. My eyes were rapidly blinking in the pain of the harsh light, and air burned its way down my lungs, worst still was the cold. I was wet. Very wet. I tried to grab whatever my hands could reach as I heard an odd chuckle. Oh no, I am in the clutches of a sadistic psychopath. Did I just survive a drowning attempt? Or was that the breathable liquid stuff in the science magazine? How rich was that guy? And why can't I see clearly? And how-

"Se…Seraphina. An..Antares Astrum. My…fierce…daughter… May your…destiny….be brighter than your name." A soft voice rasped, then gave a long sigh, interrupting my chaotic train of thoughts.

"Poor thing, she looks so adorable. But Seraphina Antares Astrum? Such a weird name." Someone near me commented.

"Another one stumbling on the doorstep huh? At least she gave it a name before leaving this world. Put her with the other orphans, we will fill in the paperwork tomorrow. Remember to put that she was born on the first of December 1881, we really don't need another scandal where a patron accused us of kidnapping their child."

Wait…orphans?

Suddenly, it all clicked in my mind. In dawning horror, I realised that I had somehow been reborn. Finally, the exhaustion and excitement became too much and I passed out.
