Chapter 35

I take a breath and hold up my right hand when he opens his mouth to say something else. “Look, let’s just work, okay? Let’s not…” not ruin this until we have to. “Let’s not say anything we’re going to regret later. We’ll talk after work.”

We’re going to have to anyway. Before Mark and Devin get back. I have to make this right and try to figure out a way to move forward without losing everything. I am, after all, running out of time.

“Go,” he says, turning his head to stare out the passenger window. “I’ll come in in a few. I doubt you want the whole office seeing us arriving together.”

He’s right, I don’t want that. At the same time, I want the whole fucking world to see us together. I can’t figure out a way to tell him that and make it make sense, so I get out of the car. I shut the door. And I walk to the entrance without looking back.
