Chapter 1'Great Start'

Can we ever know when and what may change in our lives?

Ofcourse, not.

We just acquaint with those changes, accept them and continue onward, so I did.

With each step I took towards the great entrance of Neilsen High, I had no idea what sort of fate awaited me.

My heart thudded fast as panic slowly grew and faded. I clasped the strap of my bag with moist palm and adjusted my skirt while taking in a few deep breaths.

There were so many different kind of people leading different lives and dealing with different problems before me. Whereas I tried to convince myself.

It won't be any difficult, right?

It's not like I hadn't changed schools before. It was nothing new for me, however, an odd restlessness remained in my chest.

'Everything is gonna be alright this time!' I remembered the words Mom said while caressing my face, and once again, I was filled with optimism.

While navigating my way to the class by the help of a mini map and instructions I recieved from the reception office, I entered a busy white-walled hallway with huge glass windows.

"That sick bastard is going to make me do his assignment again! I hate it! I hate it!" A girl continuously hit her head on her shut locker while sighing. Her thoughts reached my ears.

"What if an apocalypse occurs and we have to survive eating cockroaches?"

"It'd be Gross," I mumbled unconsciously, walking past that guy who was staring at a dead roach in the corner.

Let me make it clear: I never asked nor wanted to hear people's thought. I couldn't help it when people thought coherently in words, I ended up hearing them if they're close by.

Feeling guilty of Eavesdropping, and also for the sake of my inner peace, I inserted earbuds and played a song that'd distract my attention from the thoughts of others.

Walking while peering out of the large windows was rather engrossing. The vibrantly green yet sedate yard was one hell of a blessing.

What caught my eye, was a full grown cherry blossom tree embellished with snowy pink blossoms that fluttered away when the wind teased them.

Few Highschool couples were resting on the benches shaded and cooled by trees but one bench, underneath that enormously beauteous tree was left unoccupied.

Whenever I saw some lovey dovies, I found myself asking the same question yet again.

'When will I find my soulmate?'

The concept of soulmates always fascinated me. I believed in fate. I believed that our souls long for our soulmates. Not because it makes us half a person or incomplete in any way—but because there's something special about souls finding a connection, becoming hopelessly enamoured and facing challenged together. It's all I'd ever fantasised about.

It's not easy to find soulmates. It takes a lot of patience and waiting.

Even though I'd be eighteen in a few weeks, I had yet to experience a connection like that. The reason I'd been single all this time was my ability to hear thoughts. Thanks to this small condition of mine, I never found someone who'd truly love me and want to be with me.

What if you were to know the intention of every person approaching you? Whether they want to use you for timepass, or even worse, they just want a nice hookup with you and are already planning to dump you once they get their way with you.

That's just how some people are. And even if I could hear their intentions, there was not much I could do without getting myself in trouble.

However, I had faith that one day, when a beautiful sun would be gliding on everything around me, he will walk to me. My soulmate. Although, I might sound like a hopeless romantic, waiting for a divine right time, but that was exactly my perception of 'Love'.

The truth is, I had been feeding myself on these unrealistic expectations of Love just so I could avoid succumbing to rotten people like the ones I mentioned before.

My goal this time, was clear and simple: make no mistakes like before, and graduate while being invisible.

A vending machine at my side, enticed a craving in me. Something sweet; stawberry milk. I bought one and opened the seal while taking a few steps ahead.

How far could things go well for me?

A shoulder collided with mine. In one fell swoop, stawberry milk was all over the floor in front of me.

I had not even taken a sip yet.

Only a the back of this tall and black-haired culprit was visible, rushing ahead. Irrational anger rushed through me at his audacity to just ruin my day and walk off without even an apology.

"YOU GODDAMN STUPID PIECE OF SHIT!" It came out louder than I intended.

He halted.

I immediately removed my earbuds.

I did not just do that?!

I wished someone would tell me I didn't just cursed at him out loud.

Freaking hell!

He turned around, took a swift glance at me from head to toe. His eyes and mouth were frozen conyeing an expression of stunned surprise as if he'd seen a ghost.

Or did he know me?

No chance.

After he glanced at the spilt stawberry milk, in a voice less than a shout, he said: "I'm in a hurry right now, I'll pay you back." And with a smile that of an angel's, he rushed ahead.

So many shocked voices echoed in my head at once, one overlapping the other. they were all the thoughts of the students who passed by and heard me. I decided to not pay them any attention or look at any of them as I walked as fast as I could to the class room.

'Wow, what a great start, Linnet!'
