Chapter 45: Searching for Answers

**Jax**

"What's going on down here?"

Piper's eyes widened with fear. "Sophie." She shoved me away, hopped off the counter, and spun to face her sister. "Nothing's going on."

"Didn't look that way." Sophie's tone was curt.

I stood closely behind Piper, arms crossed over my chest, and watched the exchange between her and her sister. Why did it seem like Sophie was scolding Piper for being here with me? None of this was any of Sophie's concern, and I'd have no issues telling her so.

"Jax was injured while hunting. I was simply healing him."

Why was Piper explaining herself? Once again, I couldn't shake the feeling that there was a lot more going on with these sisters than they let on. But what the h*ll could they be hiding?

"Do you need something, Sophie?" I raised a brow and took a step closer to Piper, my chest brushing against her back.

"I need to speak to my sister. Alone," she snapped.
