Greem Steelguard

In Burion, the proportion of humans who could use magic was very small, abyssal even, when you compared them to other species.

The ratio was something along the lines of one magically gifted individual out of ten thousand, and in the past few centuries, it seemed to be on the decline.

Since it was a hereditary trait, highborns who came from noble families like Greem were much more likely to awaken magical talent. Or at least, it was in theory.

Despite being from one of the three major family, Greem Steelguard was desperate to awaken magical talent. However, no matter how many tests he went through, the outcome was always the same.

"You don't have talent"

"Mmh, it is indeed possible for lions to give birth to cubs..."

"In this life, you will never be able to use magic"

These words destroyed the young teenager who did not have anyone to rely on.

These words made him truly desperate...desperate enough to engage in something that was completely forbidden to even think of: a demonic ritual to communicate with a being of another plane.

Greem had stumbled upon the knowledge to create a demonic portal by pure coincidence. Centuries ago, the founder of the house Steelguard had repelled demonic beings who had invaded Burion in the Demon Gate of Boar Island. Unknown to the current heirs, the true purpose of the Steelguard Household in Boar Island was to make sure the gate was still sealed, and would forever stay sealed. If it were not for this guardian duty, they might have already demoted from their major noble family title, or perhaps their bountiful and prosperous territory would have been eyed by the imperial family itself.

The library of the Steelguards was too big, as there were more than 1800 years of accumulation stored inside. Although it was regularly cleaned by maids and butlers, not even the supreme elder, a magus who was 272 year old, could boast to have read even a tenth of it.

This was the size of the library, which was the biggest and most precious perk of the Steelguard Family.

These coincidences of a desperate youth in search of power stumbling upon a dangerous book, coupled with the youth ridiculous financials as one of the heirs of a secondary branch of the Steelguard family, as well as careful planning to create a decent demonic portal...

All of these coincidences allowed a demon to take over Greem's body.

However, it was with great shock that the demon realized a stark truth.

The demon realized with immense desperation that the body it had just taken over...lacked in talent of magic. It was not a condition where his mana pool was small, or defective. If it was the case, he would have found a solution...

However...

His body was born without a mana core.

There was no solution, no fixing this lack of magical organ.

Not to mention becoming the greatest being of the demon plane...He would never be able to become a beginner rank acolyte, much less a magus.

He thought of himself as a demon who was better, smarter, stronger than its peers.

He thought that it was unbelievably gifted as it managed to trick a human into making a contract with him, allowing him to take over his body completely, and enter in a plane that had not been invaded by any demon for the last millenia.

He thought that it was superior.

But now?

The demon...No...Greem Steelguard...felt like a true failure.

He had trapped himself into a body incapable of wielding magic. Voluntarily.

His arcane knowledge of demonic spells...They were obsolete and he would never be able to use them.
