Vera (Reworked)

Vera was having a great week, a stark contrast to the rest of her life.

Her whole life she had grown up as the jewel of the Thenition Theocracy.

With that came many responsibilities and dangers which caused her to mature quickly.

There had been many attempts on her life throughout her childhood, however, she always endured.

Even when she was called a monster by others for simply being born a vampire, she endured.

She endured it all because there was a ray of sunshine in her darkness.

A young boy with brown hair and mesmerizing ice-blue eyes.

When she was young, her father had taken her to meet various important families in hopes of her forging strong connections.

One of those families had been that of the Duke of Aspon or otherwise known as the 'Moreau's'.

During one of these many gatherings that her father held with the humans, she came across a gloomy boy standing in the corner.

His haughty gaze swept over everyone as if daring them to approach, everyone seemed to heed the unspoken warning as no one approached him.

She felt as if he wasn't human because he never blinked and didn't move an inch throughout the entire gathering. His skin was pale and his expression unreadable; in fact, he didn't seem to care about anything going on around him.

"Are you lost little one? Your mother should have told you manners before coming here."

Her father asked jokingly and received an empty gaze in response. The boy stared at the old man with eyes that held so much emotion it made even Vera do a double take.

After that meeting, she had been intrigued by him and began to stalk him during her spare time.

"Father! What's wrong with that boy!?" she exclaimed angrily as her father explained to her how rude the boy was being toward their hosts, she ignored him.

She would find out what made that boy stay away from everyone else around him.

After all, he reminded her of herself who didn't get along very well with the rest of the children.

"He's just arrogant, don't worry your pretty head about him." Her father laughed derisively as Vera rolled her eyes in disgust at his ignorance.

Over the course of several months, Vera kept track of the boy and managed to get close enough to hear what he really sounded like in private.

He was quiet and easygoing with a cheerful demeanor. He seemed to simply not be able to properly socially interact or convey what he was feeling so he was ostracized by the children of the wealthy elite. She also discovered he was quite talented with Particle manipulation.

But she found out something very interesting about him—he wasn't human.

He was half-demon.

She was sure he wasn't even aware of it as it was a highly guarded secret that she only found out about when overhearing her father talking to an important figure.

And that was why she had decided to get close to him, she wanted to befriend him, someone who was very similar to her and seemingly stuck in the same situation. And after years of slowly clawing her way into his life, she finally managed to earn his trust.

But then the illusion of happiness was shattered as the Duke of Aspon and his wife died fighting the demons during the 'War of Resurgence'.

Where the demons had begun a campaign of terror as they attacked all the races viciously.

Once the War of Resurgence began her father kept her hidden in the Theocracy and she was forced into strict closed-door training.

Unknowingly, she would never see the boy again until now.

As she gazed into the icy blue eyes of the brown-haired boy next to her, she felt a sense of fear.

After all this time she had finally found him, and yet it was all about to be taken away all over again.

She lamented quietly in her heart as she waited for death's cold hands to embrace her.

'Please, at least let him live through this.' she prayed silently.

Looking over at him one last time, her eyes opened up wide at what she saw.

Unlike her who was trembling in fear, he lay motionless.

His icy blue eyes were staring at the D+ Rank monster as its fireball shot toward them, leaving a fiery death in its wake.

Suddenly a powerful aura of mana blazed through his eyes before enveloping his whole body.

It felt as if he was even stronger than her.

As she stared at him wide-eyed, unable to gaze away.

He suddenly vanished from where he lay leaving only a cloud of dust in his wake.

She quickly shifted her gaze to the monster that was attacking them and she was barely fast enough to see him raise his rapier and slash the fireball in half.

He then pointed the rapier at the beast.

It glowed with brilliant red mana as a beam of red energy lanced forward from its tip.

The beast's flame-filled maw opened as it roared loudly before the beam hit it directly in the eye causing the creature to fall backward with a cry of pain.

A red light erupted from the beast's left eye as it writhed around on the ground as if in excruciating agony.

Her mouth hung open in amazement as she watched the beast thrash about helplessly as the mana dissipated from its eye and vanished from sight.

Its fireball has been severed in half by his blade.

A moment later a second beam of light flashed out of his right eye as he slashed down on his opponent's neck.

The beast howled in pain as blood poured forth from its wound as its body convulsed violently.

Blood splattered everywhere like a fountain of gore as its body fell lifelessly to the floor.

Vera gasped in shock and horror as she watched the beast die.

Her hands were shaking as she tried to regain control over herself as she looked over at the boy who was standing tall amidst a sea of blood.

She felt as though her mind would melt away because she could hardly believe the strength he possessed. It almost made her question her sanity. But she knew the answer; there was no way that any first-year could possibly be able to do this.

The boy had just killed a D+ Rank monster with only two attacks without breaking a sweat. She shuddered in fear as she stared at the monster that lay across the floor from her with a bloody smile.

"I thought you said I'm kind of demon-like..." Vera said weakly. She still couldn't believe what she had witnessed. It was unbelievable. There was no way that any first-year could be capable of killing an enemy like that.

The boy looked over at her with cold eyes filled with emptiness.

They were completely devoid of emotion.

"What happened to you?" She asked softly.

She could see that he had suffered much more than he revealed but he gave off an aura that seemed as if nothing affected him at all.

He continued to stare at her without responding.

Vera sighed as she looked away from him and swept her gaze over the carnage around them.

"Well what should we do now?" she asked, turning her gaze back to him.

Thud-!

She watched as his emotionless eyes suddenly lost their light and he collapsed to the ground.

Quickly dashing over to him, she checked if he was still alive.

His breathing was shallow and his lips were pale. She could see his ribs moving slightly from underneath his shirt, and his face was sweaty.

"Isaac!" she cried out, grabbing him and carrying him on her back as she headed in the direction of the gateway. "Isaac please stay with me, please don't leave me alone again."

She begged silently as tears formed in her eyes.

"Lieutenant, WAKE UP!!!" came a shout startling him from his slumber.

Shooting up out of his bed, he looked around blearily as his eyes widened.

"We're under attack, the rebels launched an offensive campaign last night and there are 50,000 of them marching on the location of our allies who aren't aware of them," shouted Don, his commanding officer.

Isaac's eyes went wide at the news.

"What are my orders, sir?" Isaac said, quickly springing out of bed.

"Quickly get geared and join the rest of 3rd Company your para dropping behind enemy lines," he said.

"Understood!" Isaac saluted.

"Good, now I have others to wake up so if you'll excuse me..." he said before running off.

Isaac got dressed and hurried outside with the rest of 3rd Company and was given his orders.

They were told that they would be para dropped near where their allied forces were hiding. Once they got there they would have to cross over one of the larger mountains. After crossing over they would be able to sneak past the rebels' line of defenses to reach their supply lines. Once they reached the supply lines they would meet up with another group of allied para troopers and would then cut off the rebel's supply lines.

Once this happened the rebels would find themselves without any means of resupplying their army causing them to crumble under the weight of the superior firepower of the allied forces. The plan was a good one, but Isaac knew it wasn't going to work like that. He had seen many of those types of plans before in his short time in service.

As soon as he thought about it, he began thinking about what could happen if the plan didn't work as planned. If the rebels did manage to defeat their army and continue marching toward the country's capital city, he knew that all hell would break loose once again.

He had no doubts about how the people would react if the rebels managed to invade the heart of their country. They would be forced into fighting or die trying. It wouldn't matter whether they were soldiers or not, everyone would be forced into war to defend their land; it was a part of war that many hoped to never see. However, they also knew that the alternative would mean a death sentence for them and their families.

Isaac had been in the military long enough to know that even though some people wanted peace, that didn't mean they weren't willing to fight for it when necessary. That is why he took this mission personally because he knew that if he failed in this operation, there was a chance that he could be blamed for thousands of deaths.

The more he thought about it the more nervous he became.

He had just turned 19 this year so it was a heavy burden to put on his shoulders. He had heard stories from older men who had done much more than him and survived. But he doubted himself.

Especially when he considered the fact that he had a younger sister to take care of.

Because of the civil war that broke out, he had been forced to enlist on the condition that his sister's expenses would be paid for as he was her only living relative.

If something happened to him, then who knows what might happen to her.

That was the thought that constantly ran through his mind.

He hadn't seen her since he enlisted, If things went south, then there was a chance that they might never see each other again...

Suddenly he felt an icy chill run down his spine.

I hope this mission will go smoothly...

The wind suddenly picked up and whipped around them, bringing him back to reality as he realized that his thoughts had drifted off.
