__________

Over half a minute later, another explosion erupted in the apartment. Some unfortunate soul must have tripped the booby trap at the door.

[Ding! Killed a mafia member, earned 100 villain points. Current progress: 520/1000]

"Tsk, only one guy got taken out." Jason muttered, clearly disappointed with the trap's limited effect.

But he wasn't too concerned; the booby trap's main purpose wasn't just to kill, but to buy him enough time to safely descend to the ground.

The trap had stalled them for nearly a minute, and now Jason was less than forty meters from the ground.

However, he was still too high up to land safely and needed to delay them a little longer.

Thinking quickly, Jason freed one hand and pulled out his Beretta M9 from its holster. Aiming back up at the apartment balcony, he prepared to slow down any pursuers.

A few seconds later, a figure appeared on the balcony, peering down.

Jason halted his descent, gripping the rope tightly with his left hand as he aimed with his right and squeezed the trigger repeatedly.

Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!

A scream rang out from the balcony, and the figure vanished.

[Ding! Injured a mafia member, earned 20 villain points. Current progress: 540/1000]

"Only 20 points? Guess I just grazed him," Jason sighed, though he didn't dwell on it.

Shooting from this angle, with one hand on the rope and the target forty meters away, was no small feat.

The shots had achieved their goal; at least no one dared peek over the edge again.

Seizing the moment, Jason continued his descent.

Now, he was just twenty meters from the ground.

---

On the balcony, Anatoly looked nervously at his subordinates, some clutching their ears in pain.

If Vladimir hadn't held him back, he would have been the one shot at.

Anatoly patted his chest, breathing heavily, "Damn, this guy's a sharp shooter. What now?"

Vladimir scanned the balcony, spotting the rope Jason had used. After a moment, his face twisted with a vengeful grin.

"Cut the rope. If Jason falls from this height, he'll be crippled for life, and we can hand him over to Kingpin."

"Good idea!"

Anatoly raised his .45-caliber Colt M1911 and fired twice at the rappelling rope. The shots left two sizable holes, but it didn't break.

"This rope's tougher than it looks." Anatoly muttered, surprised.

"It's military-grade, designed for use on helicopters." Vladimir explained, "Jason came prepared."

Anatoly scoffed, stepping up to take aim again.

Jason heard the shots from above and knew his worst fear had come true.

Gritting his teeth, he increased his rappelling speed.

Bang! Bang!

Two more shots hit the rope, finally severing it.

Jason felt himself plummeting backward toward the ground, about fifteen meters below. A fall from this height would leave him seriously injured, if not worse.

In a split-second decision, his survival instincts and years of brutal training kicked in. Using the strength of his core, Jason twisted his body to face downward.

With a thud, he hit the ground feet-first, a cloud of dust rising around him. He rolled forward, absorbing the impact as best he could.

The crowd gasped, watching as Jason landed and crouched on the ground, clutching his ankle in visible pain.

The impact had left his legs throbbing with a sharp, intense pain that almost made him black out. Jason gritted his teeth, forcing himself up, and limped toward the nearby shopping mall, where he could lose himself in the crowd and complex layout.

"That guy's unbelievably lucky." Vladimir sneered as he watched Jason struggle, "But his luck's about to run out."

Anatoly raised an automatic rifle, aiming at Jason's back, "Yeah, Kingpin's top man, running like a stray dog."

Bang! Bang! Bang!

Three shots rang out, hitting Jason in the back and knocking him to the ground, protected only by his bulletproof vest.

As Jason fell, the crowd scattered, screaming and fleeing in panic.

Despite the hit, Jason forced himself up, knowing that a single second on the ground would give the mobsters enough time to finish him off.

He zigzagged through the crowd, using the bystanders as shields.

Although it was ruthless, the tactic worked; as bullets flew, several bystanders were hit, their pained cries echoing.

Jason himself took a glancing hit to his left arm but pushed through the pain as he sprinted toward the mall.

[Ding! Indirectly killed a bystander, earned 100 villain points. Current progress: 640/1000]

[Ding! Indirectly injured six bystanders, earned 300 villain points. Current progress: 940/1000]

After evading his pursuers at the cost of his injured arm and seven casualties, Jason finally reached the mall.

He barged into an ice cream shop, diving behind the counter.

Barely catching his breath, he glanced at his arm. Through the bloody wound, he could see the tail end of a bullet embedded in the muscle.

A ricochet, likely—otherwise, it would have torn straight through.

With years of experience in these situations, Jason carefully felt around the wound, located the bullet, and gritted his teeth as he pulled it out.

His clothes were stained with blood, and sweat covered his brow as he fought through the pain.

The bullet clattered to the ground.

Jason tore a strip of cloth from his sleeve, wrapping it tightly around his arm to stem the bleeding.

Just as he finished bandaging, footsteps echoed from outside. The crowd had fled, leaving only the mobsters in pursuit.

Jason glanced at his system interface, his options narrowing.

[Shopping Mall: Cold Weapon Proficiency, Combat Proficiency, Firearms Proficiency, Driving Proficiency, Flying Proficiency, Special Ops Training…]

The footsteps were closing in. He scrolled quickly, thinking of what skill could help him in this situation.

A few seconds later, he selected *Firearms Proficiency*.

In a crisis like this, there was no better choice than a gun.

[Firearms Mastery Level 1 (Already Obtained)]

[Firearms Mastery Level 2 (Already Obtained)]

[Firearms Mastery Level 3 (Already Obtained)]

[Firearms Mastery Level 4 (Already Obtained)]

[Firearms Mastery Level 5 (Not Obtained)]

Jason clicked on *Firearms Mastery Level 5.*

[(Required: 50 points; Strength: 30, Agility: 35, Endurance: 30, Intelligence: 35)]

"Of course, it has requirements." Jason muttered, frustrated. He opened his stats to check his attributes.

[Strength 33]

[Agility 32]

[Endurance 30]

[Intelligence 28]

He was ten points short of meeting the requirements for Level 5.
