Chapter Thirty-four

Vanessa

"Is this what I think it is?" I managed, my voice a hoarse whisper.

Richard, a playful glint in his eyes, feigned innocence. "What do you think it is?"

"A ring?" I blurted out, the word hanging heavy in the air.

He chuckled. "You know what, just open it first, then you can tell me."

My fingers trembled slightly as I lifted the lid of the velvet box. A glint of silver caught the candlelight, but it wasn't a diamond.

Tentatively, I lifted the velvet lining. Nestled inside was a simple silver key.

Surprise curved my lips into a smile, as relief washed over me for a second, mingled with a flicker of disappointment I couldn't quite explain.

"A key?" I asked, the disappointment evaporating. "What key is this for?"

"The key to this apartment," Richard announced, his voice brimming with satisfaction. "I want you to be able to come and go as you please. No more sneaking around or feeling like a guest."
