Chapter 21: Just a Precaution, Right?

*Claire*

My head throbs with the pulse of my heart. It hurts to breathe. The adrenaline left my body a few hours ago. There are knots under my skin surrounded by massive bruises where the impact of the bullet struck me. I know some of the medications the doctors and nurses have me on are supposed to help.

Still, I am in pain. I sigh for the millionth time as I wait for the results of my tests to come back. The I.V. in my hand feels crooked. I am hungry. I am tired. I hurt. Most of all, I am irritated because none of the nurses will tell me about Wates.

I know they do not want me to worry, but the fact they are not saying anything is really what is worrying me. I know he was stabbed by one of those punks. I cannot wait to see them in court.

I hear a couple of taps on the door before seeing the Chief poke his head into the room.

“Knock knock,” he says. “Just coming to check in on you. How are you feeling?”
