The New Kid

Before answering Mr. Anderson, I looked around the class for a split second. All eyes were on me, but I wasn't nervous. As a vampire I've been around longer than anyone in Duskwood. I was born here at Duskwood in 1806 and turned a vampire when I was 17. I've been a vampire for about 200 years, so history was never a problem to me.

I cleared my throat and calmy started to explain, "Ideology is the base of history, especially in the political field. I say this because such things as communism, democracy, monarchy, racism, sexism, and so on all began on one's own idea. The same goes for things as small as a classroom, because we have class leaders such as the president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer. How does students in the class win these roles? Well, they start campaigning by issuing out promises on ideas they have. For the candidate to win the role their aiming for they need to sell those ideas to the voters. Though many of the times when they win, those promises are not kept, making the people become on edge. In fact, ideology looks good on paper and sounds great when said, but it's totally different when applied to real life."

As I finished my last sentence the class as well as Mr. Anderson was speechless. The moment of silence was then broken by the applaud of Mr. Anderson, followed by the rest of the class.

"Well said." Mr. Anderson praised me after the clapping stopped, then continued, "That class, is how the questions I ask should be answered. And also, Dominic is right, ideology is the base of history. Now the reason why I asked that question is because our topic is related to ideology. This topic has to do with the history of Duskwood. Can anyone guess?"

"Mayor Willows control in 1825." A boy answered from the back of the class.

"Yes, precisely." Mr. Anderson then walked towards his desk and lifted a book. "I want everyone to turn to page 28 in their textbook."

With that the class became filled the sound of turning pages. Not long after the bell rang and Mr. Anderson then said, "Alright class, that's it for today. For your homework..."

He became cut off from the groans and moaning of the class. He then finished by saying, "Your homework for our next class, is to find out what was Mayor Willows idea for Duskwood. Class dismissed."

Mr. Anderson left the class, and everyone started to gather their books and left behind him. When I walked out the door of the classroom Megan was right there waiting for me.

"How was history?' She asked walking along beside me.

I shrugged, "Nothing I haven't lived before. How about you? How was math?"

"You know I suck at math. Whose idea was it to teach math so early in the morning. When I find that person, I swear I'm gonna rip out his throat." Megan angrily stated, making me chuckle.

As we walked down the hallway headed for our next class, which was Literature, I could smell the scent of cigar coming closer and closer behind us.

"What's up Aaron." I said, before he could even say a word.

"Oh, come on. How do you do that? Are you a psychic or something?" Aaron whined as he slapped my shoulder.

"Well, I'm definitely a something." I whispered.

"Hi Megan." Aaron then waved to her, and she also greeted him back.

"So what's up." I asked him as we continued to walk down the hallway.

Aaron then asked, "Did you guys see the new kid?"

Megan and I both looked at each other before she answered, "No, why?"

Aaron then said, "No reason, just asking. I heard a few girls talking about him, saying that he's cute."

Megan joked, "Why, are you interested?"

"How could I be, I haven't even seen him." Aaron then claimed.

Megan then began to tease Aaron as we entered the classroom. "When are you going to stop." Aaron complained.

"Not until she gets an answer she's satisfied with." I chuckled taking my seat between Aaron and Megan.

The noise in the class started to die down as soon as the teacher entered.

"Good morning class." She greeted as she stood in front of the class.

After we greeted her, she then continued, "Yesterday I gave you an assignment to find and explain the main theme in chapter 6 of pride and prejudice If you did your assignment, please take out your paper and place it on your desk for me to collect."

I reached for my bag, took out a black folder and searched through the papers inside. When I found the assignment, I placed it on my desk and stuffed the folder back into my bag.

The teacher walked around the class and collected the assignment from those who did, whereas she also lectured those who didn't.

After a while she went back up to the front of the class and placed the papers on her desk. Before she could say anything else the doors of the classroom opened.

"Sorry I'm late." The person spoke.

At that time, I was reading a page in chapter 12 of pride and prejudice, so I didn't see who came in, but I smelled.

It was a familiar scent. I scent I knew all too well, one that I would never forget. My heart began beating rapidly, and I froze in place. I was scared to look up to see who it was, for it was too good to be true, or maybe it would be just a coincidence.

"Class, before we continue there's a new student. Please introduce yourself." The teacher spoke.

As she said this, I slowly started to raise my head and then my eyes met with him. Before he said his name, I whispered to myself, "Liam?"

Megan must have heard this, for she shockingly turned to face me.

"Hi everyone, I'm Liam Woods a junior, and I recently moved to Duskwood from California." He introduced.

I watched as he walked to take the empty seat next to Megan.

He smelled, sounded, and looked exactly like Liam, my Liam. The only thing that was different was his last name, for the Liam I knew was Liam Miller.

I sat there as stiff as stone. Could this be happening? Could this be the Liam I fell in love with 81 years ago. No it couldn't be, for he was a human and not a vampire. What was happening? How was he here?

When the class was over I quickly ran behind him. I caught up to him in the hallway and snatched his wrist.

"Liam, How?" I said as my eyes started to tear up.

He blankly looked at me before saying, "I'm sorry, do I know you?"

"Liam, It's me Nic." I assured him, but as I looked in his eyes I saw confusement.

"I think you have the wrong person." Liam then said.

I looked at him. My heart was aching, how I hoped that he was my Liam, but seeing the way he was looking at me, I knew he was not.

Realizing that he had absolutely no clue to who I was I released his wrist and apologized, "Sorry," then I walked away.

I headed up to the school roof where I started to kick around the paint cans that were there. In sheer frustration, I threw myself onto my knees, where I started to sob.

I had never cried this much since Liam was lying in my hands, dead. I always hoped that I would run into him one day again, but never thought that doing so would reopen the wound on my heart. He was right in front of me, but it wasn't him.

A few minutes passed and I heard the rood door fly open. I could smell that it was Megan. I could sense that she was worried.

"Dominic." Megan shouted as she vampire speeded next to me throwing both our bags onto the ground. I felt her arms gently wrap around my shoulders.

"It's not him Megan." I wailed, resting my head on her shoulder.

In that moment, flashbacks of the past swirled in my mind. Up from the moment where I met Liam to the moment where I lost him.

"Is this about Liam?" Megan asked, but I didn't answer.

I couldn't say, or do anything. I just sat there and cried. While I cried I was also reminded of the times before I met Liam. I was a cold guy who didn't hold any emotions that were considered a weakness. I never cried, laughed, or cared about others. I was selfish.

Liam was the one who changed me. He made me want to love and feel love again. I made me become one with my emotions again.

Both Megan and I lingered on the roof for the remainder of that morning. When lunch came around we went to the cafeteria where we spotted Aaron.

"Guys." He waved at us to come over. We headed to the table he was sitting and sat beside him.

"Where did you guys disappear to?" He asked looking at us.

"We went to the roof for fresh air. Who knew time flies so fast." Megan aswered as she snatched the milk box off Aaron's lunch tray, and chugged it.

"Seriously!" Aaron complained, "You do know that if you want milk you could go get it yourself."

Megan shrugged, "It tastes better when I take it from you."

Arron then lifted up the burger in his tray and raised it to his mouth. "Every damn day," He whispered before taking a bite.

I felt the vibrations of Megan kicking Aaron's foot from under the table making him groan in pain.

"I heard that." She smiled, and then the bickering between the two began.
