Chapter 65

Jackson and I managed to get around two hours of sleep that night, before his mom called saying that she had arrived in Seattle, so we got dressed before heading back to the hospital to meet her. Even though I was tired I didn't mind, since I wanted to know how Brooks and Richard are doing.

"How's Brooks?" I ask Derek once I see him in the hallway.

"She didn't make it." He sighs sadly.

"Oh my god. I can't believe it." I sigh.

"I know. I have to help the interns tell her mom, which I'm not looking forward to at all." He says.

"I imagine not." I say.

"Have you heard anything else about Richard?" He asks me.

"No. Jackson and I just got here, but him and his mom are going to check in on him right now." I say.

"I still can't believe everything that has happened here in the past two days." Derek sighs.

"I kind of can. Seattle Grace surgeons have been known to be involved in a unusual amount of deadly situations." I shrug.

"That is true."

"I'm really sorry about Brooks. I know that you enjoyed working with her."

"Thanks. I appreciate it." He sighs sadly. "If you don't mind can you get Zola from daycare and watch her, just until I talk to the interns and find out how far away Heather's mom is?"

"Of course. I'll go get her right now." I smile before going to get Zola, then bringing her with me to the attendings lounge, so I can get her a snack.

"You are just so adorable and perfect." I smile at Zola as I feed her a snack. "And when you grow up you're going to be an amazing surgeon, just like your parents. You're going to be a neurosurgeon like your aunt Lily, but we'll let your dad think it's because of him." I joke.

"You know she doesn't know what you're talking about, right?" Jackson smiles kissing me once he walks into the lounge.

"I'll have you know Zola is very advanced for her age. I bet she knows every word I'm saying. Isn't that right, Zola?" I smile.

"If you say so." He laughs.

"How's Richard?" I ask.

"The same. My mother pretty much forced Bailey to close him up, because she feels he's to unstable for the surgery right now."

"I hope he makes it. The hospital wouldn't be the same without him." I sigh.

"He will." Jackson assures me before his pager goes off. "They need me in surgery. It'll be a couple of hours. I'll page you when I finish." He says.

"Avery, I just got you're shoulder to stop hurting and you're really about to take your sling off and operate for hours." I scold him.

"A life depends on it." He smirks kissing me on the cheek before he leaves.

"Why is he so stubborn?" I ask Zola as she babbles to me. I continue to sit and play with Zola until Derek comes to pick her up, so he can take her home where the babysitter is meeting him at. I go take a nap in a on-call room for a little while and I decide to go check in on Meredith and Bailey once I wake up.

"Hey, you look stressed." I say walking up to Jackson as he stands at the front desk.

"I am. I need to find someone to officiate my patients wedding. We're not sure if she's going to make it and she wants to get married to her fiance right now, just in case." He says.

"Good luck with that." I say patting him on the back.

"Where are you off to?" He asks me.

"To see Meredith and the baby." I smile.

"Well you have fun, while I continue to look for a wedding officiant." He says kissing me.

"Okay." I say before walking to Meredith's room with Cristina.

"They're opening him up again." Cristina says as we walk into the room, referring to Richard. He chose Meredith as the decision maker for times like now, when he isn't able to make his own medical decisions and she decided that he's ready for a second surgery.

"Yep, don't say anything." Meredith says.

"I'm not." Cristina says.

"She thought it was a stupid idea the first time and even more stupid the second time." Meredith says to Alex and I as we play with the baby.

"You're the one who has to decide what Richard would want. Wouldn't want to be you." Cristina says.

"Thanks." Meredith sighs sarcastically.

"But to be clear, when you're making these decisions for me give my heart at least 24 hours to recover, before you cut me stem to stern." Cristina says.

"You just couldn't hold it in, could you?" Meredith asks?

"Meredith's your healthcare proxy!" I ask Cristina. She shakes her head yes pointing from her to Meredith.

"I get to make the decisions for everyone." Meredith smiles sarcastically.

"Not Owen?" Alex asks her.

"No." She shrugs.

"Surprising." I say.

"Who's yours?" Alex asks me.

"Jackson, of course. Who's yours?" I ask him.

"Oh, I never filled out the forms. I had the papers back when it was gonna be Izzie." Alex says.

"Well that's definitely not an option anymore, hasn't been for awhile." I sigh.

"Thanks Captain obvious." Alex says.

"Your welcome." I smirk.

"Mer could be yours too." Cristina says.

"You think I make the wrong decisions all the time. I don't know why you're selling me to him." Meredith says.

"Will you stop being so insecure? Just because I disagree with you doesn't mean I don't respect what you think." Cristina says.

"Yeah, she can hold more than one point of view in her mind. She's mature." I say making Alex laugh.

"Would you guys want extraordinary measures taken if you couldn't make your own medical decisions?" Cristina asks.

"No, not if it's only going to pro long death." Meredith says.

"I agree." Cristina says.

"I would. I believe in miracles and all that stuff, so I would want every measure that could be taken to be took." I say.

"Positive. I should make you my proxy." Alex says to me.

"Really." I laugh.

"Yeah, Mer's got enough to take care of."

"You want extraordinary measures or should I just unplug you?" I ask.

"Whatever your heart decides. You'll make the right decision." He says.

"Wait, we do realize that none of us are dying like right now?" Cristina asks.

"You are correct." I say as her pager goes off and she leaves for surgery. I stay in Meredith's room until Jackson finishes tending to his patients, then I wait for him to change out of his scrubs and we head home.

"Baby." Jackson says as we lay down in bed that night.

"Jackson, you better not be asking what I think you're about to ask. I already told you I'm to tired for sex." I mumble half way asleep with my eyes still closed.

"That's not what I was about to say." He laughs "I just wanted to say how much I love you. When my patient and her fiance got married today, I couldn't help but think about how much they reminded me of you and I. They couldn't imagine not being together, just like I couldn't imagine being without you."

"I couldn't imagine living without you either, baby. You're my night and shining and whatever." I say making him laugh.

"Well I'm glad to be your night and shining whatever." He smiles.

"I love you Avery." I smile.

"I love you too Mrs. Avery." He says kissing me as I lay comfortably on his chest, before falling asleep.
